Pete Crow-Armstrong and Alex Bregman drove Chicago’s extra-base barrage past Atlanta, 8-4

Wrigley Field got an eight-run lesson in what loud contact looks like. The Cubs beat the Braves 8-4 on Wednesday by stacking extra-base hits all evening, with Pete Crow-Armstrong and Alex Bregman taking turns turning solid innings into damaging ones.

The lead kept growing because Chicago kept lifting the ball

The Cubs put Atlanta on the defensive immediately. In the first inning, Bregman doubled to center to score Michael Busch, then was thrown out trying for third. Even with the extra out attached, the play established the shape of the night: Chicago was going to keep driving the ball into the gaps and make the Braves absorb hard contact before they could settle into the game.

That early run gave Shota Imanaga room to work, and he made excellent use of it. The Cubs left-hander went six innings, allowed four hits, walked nobody and struck out eight on 100 pitches. Atlanta did not score against him until the sixth, when Matt Olson grounded out to the pitcher and Ronald Acuna Jr. came home. That is a modest scoring play on paper, but it also underlined how little clean damage the Braves were doing against Imanaga. Through six innings, they had no home runs and only one run despite putting the ball in play often enough to avoid being completely overmatched.

While Imanaga controlled the middle of the game, Chicago kept adding. Crow-Armstrong homered to right in the third. Bregman homered to left in the fourth. In the fifth, Crow-Armstrong tripled to right to score Carson Kelly, and Bregman followed later in the inning with a triple to left that brought home Crow-Armstrong and Seiya Suzuki. By the time JR Ritchie exited after 4 2/3 innings, the Braves starter had been charged with six earned runs on seven hits, including two home runs. Chicago had not merely pieced together rallies; it had built the lead with impact swings.

Crow-Armstrong’s star turn met Bregman’s precision

Crow-Armstrong and Bregman solved Atlanta in different ways, but the result was identical. Crow-Armstrong finished 3 for 4 with three runs scored, three RBIs, two home runs and a walk. Bregman went 3 for 4 with four RBIs and finished a single short of the cycle after his double, home run and triple. When a lineup gets that kind of production from two spots, pitchers rarely get a quiet inning, and that is exactly what happened here. Chicago scored in the first, third, fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth.

The supporting cast mattered too, even when the box score looks quieter. Kelly added two hits and scored once. Michael Conforto drove in Tyrone Taylor with a single in the eighth to make it 8-2, an important tack-on run given how the ninth unfolded. Busch scored the game’s first run, and Suzuki scored on Bregman’s fifth-inning triple despite going hitless. The Cubs finished with 12 hits, three walks and a hit batter. They also left 16 men on base, which is a reminder that this could have been even more punishing for Atlanta if a few more of those baserunners had been cashed in.

Atlanta, to its credit, did not disappear. Acuna had two hits and scored, Dubon had two hits and an RBI, and Olson, Austin Riley and Sean Murphy each drove in a run. But the Braves never found the same kind of forceful contact. They had eight hits, only one walk and no home runs, and they struck out nine times. Their first two runs came on groundouts in the sixth and seventh, useful plays but not the sort that erase a multi-run deficit quickly. Even the ninth-inning push — Dubon’s RBI double and Murphy’s run-scoring groundout — arrived after Chicago had already built a six-run cushion.

Our take: Chicago looked dangerous, but not flawless

Our take: this was a convincing Cubs win because the strongest performances came from the places that tend to matter most over a long schedule — frontline starting pitching and middle-of-the-order damage. Imanaga’s six innings with no walks gave the game structure, and the lineup rewarded him with three home runs and eight extra-base hits overall. Still, Chicago left 16 on base and gave back some sharpness late. Aaron Civale, Ryan Rolison and Ryan Zeferjahn covered the final three innings, and the Braves scored three times in that stretch, with two inherited runners eventually crossing. The Cubs earned the result comfortably, but there was enough late leakage to suggest that cleaner bullpen innings would make nights like this feel even more complete.

Our take on Atlanta is simpler: the Braves were tidy in the field, making no errors and turning three double plays, but the game was lost in the mismatch between Chicago’s extra-base output and Atlanta’s. Braves pitchers allowed 12 hits, three homers, two triples and three doubles, while Cubs hitters produced 28 total bases. That is too much loud contact to survive, even with a few defensive escapes. At the plate, Atlanta did see 165 pitches, yet turned that workload into only one walk and four runs. A reasonable improvement from this game would be twofold: reduce the kind of elevated contact that led to 18 Cubs fly balls and three home runs, and convert patient at-bats into more baserunners instead of mostly deep counts. The Braves had 11 left on base, which says opportunities existed. The Cubs were simply better at turning theirs into damage.
