Mike Yastrzemski’s sixth-inning blast flips Braves past Astros after Hunter Brown’s strong start

Brown owned the afternoon until the sixth owned Houston

Brown gave Houston exactly the kind of start that usually puts a team in position to win. He struck out 10 Braves in five scoreless innings, allowed only three hits, and needed 98 pitches to get there. Atlanta was not making easy outs — the Braves saw 162 pitches over the day and drew four walks — but against Brown they mostly settled for deep counts without damage.

Houston found the first run before Atlanta found any rhythm. Jose Altuve’s solo homer in the fourth, a 335-foot shot to left, broke the scoreless start and gave the Astros a 1-0 lead. At that point, the shape of the game favored Houston: Brown was missing bats, the Astros already had traffic on the bases, and Martin Perez was working with less margin even though he was limiting the damage.

Then the entire game turned on the first inning after Brown exited. Bryan King did not record an out, and Atlanta finally cashed in. Ozzie Albies tied it with a single to right that scored Michael Harris II and sent Mauricio Dubon to third. A few pitches later, Yastrzemski drove a three-run homer to right-center, 373 feet, and the Braves had gone from trailing by one to leading 4-1. Atlanta finished with only six hits all game; three of them came in that sudden burst against King, and that was enough to decide the afternoon.

Atlanta’s relief depth finished what Perez started

Perez’s line was not overpowering, but it was useful. He gave the Braves 4.1 innings, allowed six hits and two walks, and kept Houston to a single run, the Altuve homer. That mattered because Houston had more baserunners than Atlanta for much of the day. Perez bent, Victor Mederos cleaned up the fifth, and then Atlanta handed the middle innings to AJ Smith-Shawver, whose two scoreless innings with four strikeouts gave the Braves real control of the game once they had the lead.

Houston did pull one run back in the eighth when Yainer Diaz homered to right-center, trimming the margin to 4-2. But that was the only late crack Atlanta allowed. Ray Kerr gave up that solo shot and nothing else in his inning, and Dylan Dodd handled the ninth with three strikeouts. In total, Braves relievers covered 4.2 innings, allowed only two hits, walked nobody, and struck out nine. For a game decided by one explosive inning, that kind of bullpen finish was just as important as the homer that created the lead.

The contrast on the Houston side was almost cruelly narrow. Brown was excellent. Miguel Ullola followed with two scoreless innings, and Tatsuya Imai added two more while striking out four. Houston pitchers piled up 14 strikeouts overall and held Atlanta to a .182 average. Yet the one stretch that belonged to King swallowed the rest of that good work. That is the harsh arithmetic of baseball: one pocket of disorder can outweigh eight otherwise sturdy innings.

Our take: the Astros wasted the fuller day at the plate

Our take: Houston will look at the hit column and wonder how this became a loss. The Astros out-hit Atlanta 8-6 and got multi-hit games from Yordan Alvarez, Altuve, and Diaz. They also hit two home runs. But the rest of the offense never connected into anything larger. Houston drew only two walks, struck out 11 times, and left 15 runners on base. With no doubles and no triples, almost all of the non-homer pressure came one base at a time, and Atlanta’s bullpen had room to escape it.

There is an obvious improvement point there, and it is not a vague one. The Astros generated enough traffic to do more than score twice; the problem was that too much of it ended without an extra hit or a sustained sequence. Houston also has reason to revisit the handoff after a short-but-dominant start. Brown was done after five scoreless innings and 98 pitches, and the very next arm allowed four runs without recording an out. That does not erase Brown’s work, but it explains why the game slipped.

Atlanta, for its part, should enjoy the win without pretending the offense was smooth for nine innings. The Braves struck out 14 times and stranded 13 runners, so this was not a day of relentless pressure. Matt Olson went hitless, and Brewer Hicklen and Ha-Seong Kim combined to go 0-for-8 with five strikeouts. Even so, the Braves did enough around the edges to make the sixth possible: Harris reached twice on walks and scored, Dubon got on and came home twice in the decisive frame, Albies delivered the tying single, and Yastrzemski supplied the one swing the game never recovered from.

That leaves a tidy verdict on an untidy game. Houston got the better starting pitching performance and more hits, but Atlanta got the only clustered offense that mattered and the sharper relief finish. In a 4-2 result shaped by one inning, the Braves earned the cleaner reading of the day: not prettier baseball, just better-timed baseball.
