Falcons run for five touchdowns in 45-24 win over Saints

Atlanta turned Caesars Superdome into a runway for its backfield, piling up 205 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns in a 45-24 victory over New Orleans. Bijan Robinson broke the game open early, Brian Robinson Jr. finished it, and Michael Penix Jr. supplied efficient balance whenever the Falcons needed a throw.

Bijan Robinson gave Atlanta the first punch

The Falcons needed less than seven minutes to establish what kind of night this would be. Bijan Robinson ripped off a 59-yard touchdown run at 13:34 of the first quarter, then returned near the end of the period with a 4-yard scoring run at 0:48. Before New Orleans had found any rhythm, Atlanta was already up 14-0.

New Orleans answered quickly in the second quarter when Alvin Kamara scored from 3 yards out at 14:57, but the Falcons never let the game settle. Brian Robinson Jr. punched in a 4-yard touchdown at 8:59, and Nick Folk added a 29-yard field goal with 3:07 left in the half to send Atlanta to the break ahead 24-7.

What stood out was how cleanly Atlanta converted its rushing edge into points. The Falcons finished with 205 yards on 35 carries, good for 5.9 yards per rush, and their two lead backs accounted for all five rushing touchdowns. Bijan Robinson supplied the bigger bursts with 145 yards on 19 attempts, while Brian Robinson Jr. handled the short-yardage finish with three touchdowns of his own.

When the Saints pushed back, Penix answered

The Saints trimmed the margin to 24-10 on Daniel Carlson's 27-yard field goal at 7:38 of the third quarter, but Atlanta answered again before the period ended. Brian Robinson Jr. scored from 8 yards at 2:11, restoring a three-touchdown cushion and keeping New Orleans from turning the night into a one-score chase.

Kamara's second rushing touchdown, a 5-yarder at 13:00 of the fourth, cut it to 31-17 and briefly gave the home side a pulse. Penix ended that uncertainty at 9:50, finding Jahan Dotson for a 31-yard touchdown. When Brian Robinson Jr. added an 11-yard scoring run at 6:52, Atlanta had stretched the lead to 45-17 and effectively closed the door before Devaughn Vele's late touchdown for New Orleans.

Penix did not need high volume to matter. He completed 15 of 20 passes for 223 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions, posting a 127.7 rating. Drake London led Atlanta's receivers with five catches for 96 yards, Dotson turned two receptions into 54 yards and a score, and Kyle Pitts Sr. added 47 yards on three catches. It was the kind of passing night that complemented the run game instead of competing with it.

New Orleans found passing yards, but not enough balance

The Saints were able to move the ball through the air for stretches. Tyler Shough completed 30 of 48 passes for 286 yards and a touchdown, Chris Olave topped 100 yards with eight catches for 116, Juwan Johnson added six receptions for 59 yards, and Vele finished with six catches for 54 yards and the late score. Kamara also contributed as a receiver with five catches for 35 yards.

The harder work came on the ground, where New Orleans never generated consistent yardage. The Saints ran 19 times for 50 yards, an average of 2.6 per carry, and Kamara's rushing total was 23 yards despite his two short touchdowns. Those goal-line finishes kept New Orleans on the board, but they did not change the larger problem of trying to keep pace without a dependable run game.

Atlanta's defence did not need a takeaway spree to tilt the game; one was enough when paired with the offence's efficiency. The Falcons finished with two sacks, including one from Samson Ebukam and half-sacks from Harold Perkins Jr. and Xavier Watts, and they recovered the game's only fumble when Kendre Miller lost one for New Orleans. C.J. Henderson led Atlanta with 10 tackles, matching Perkins for the team high.

Our take: Atlanta's efficiency was far more damaging than the raw totals

The boxscore offers an interesting contrast. First downs were relatively close at 24-22, and possession was nearly even at 30:07 for Atlanta and 29:15 for New Orleans. But the Falcons were dramatically sharper with each snap, averaging 7.5 yards per play to the Saints' 4.6, protecting the ball all night and turning four of five red-zone trips into touchdowns.

That is why this result felt more decisive than the possession split suggests. Atlanta did not need 69 plays or 48 pass attempts to control the game; it produced explosive gains on the ground, asked Penix to be precise rather than busy, and rarely wasted a series. New Orleans, by contrast, got respectable receiving numbers but too little support from its rushing attack to make the game uncomfortable for long.

If the Falcons are looking for a correction after a 21-point win, discipline is the obvious starting point after eight penalties for 70 yards. For the Saints, the path to a more competitive night looks clearer: a passing total near 300 yards mattered less because the run game stalled at 50, and that left too much of the burden on Shough. On this scoreboard, Atlanta's balance was not just better. It was the difference.
