Kirk’s three RBIs and Bateman’s early homer carry Blue Jays past Orioles 7-3

The Blue Jays did not need a spotless afternoon to beat Baltimore at Rogers Centre. They built a 5-0 cushion by the third inning, got the biggest blows from Alejandro Kirk and Brett Bateman, and made sure the Orioles never turned their late push into a true reset in a 7-3 Toronto win.

Toronto’s cushion arrived before Baltimore settled

Toronto’s best work came in simple, direct pieces. In the first inning, Brett Bateman came around on Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s double to right, and Guerrero Jr. was home moments later when Kirk lined a single to right. That early 2-0 lead mattered because it let the Blue Jays play from ahead almost all day, and it came from the heart of the order turning one baserunner into a pair of runs instead of wasting the opening.

The third inning gave the game its shape. Bateman drove a solo homer to right-center, listed at 403 feet, and Kirk followed later with a two-run shot to left-center that scored George Springer and pushed the margin to 5-0. Toronto did not need one huge avalanche inning; it stacked timely swings. Kirk finished with three RBIs, Springer had two hits, Guerrero Jr. scored twice, and Bateman’s line included two runs and the home run that widened the lane.

Baltimore never really recovered from the damage done against Kyle Bradish. In three innings, the Orioles starter allowed eight hits, five earned runs and both Toronto home runs. The Blue Jays kept him working without ever going silent for long, and that theme lasted beyond Bradish’s outing. Toronto saw 153 pitches, drew five walks, took two hit-by-pitches and still left 16 runners on base. That last number is the only reason the score stayed merely comfortable instead of turning lopsided.

The Orioles found openings, but not a lasting foothold

Baltimore’s first run said plenty about the messy part of Toronto’s day. In the fourth, Gunnar Henderson scored when Christian Encarnacion-Strand reached safely on a fielding error by third baseman Kazuma Okamoto. The Blue Jays won by four, but they also committed three errors, and that is the kind of looseness that gives away innings. The Orioles could not fully cash in, though, stranding 10 runners and finishing with only six hits.

The margin tightened a little in stages. Andres Gimenez doubled to right in the sixth to score Josh Smith and make it 6-1, but the Orioles answered their best with Pete Alonso’s two-run homer to left in the seventh, with Yohel Pozo scoring ahead of him. At 6-3, the game at least hinted at tension. Toronto’s reply was immediate and useful: Ernie Clement’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh brought home Guerrero Jr. for the final 7-3. That extra run did not change the mood as much as it changed the arithmetic; Baltimore never got within one swing after that.

Toronto’s pitching deserves a share of the credit for keeping the Orioles scattered. Spencer Miles opened with two scoreless innings and struck out five while allowing just one hit. The middle innings were less tidy, especially once the errors entered the game and Alonso found the seats, but the full staff line still held up: six hits allowed, two earned runs and 11 strikeouts across nine innings. Tyler Rogers and Louis Varland closed the door with two scoreless innings at the back end, and Baltimore’s offense simply did not produce enough sustained contact to overcome the early hole.

Our take: a strong result with a couple of warning labels

Our take: this was a convincing offensive performance, and also a reminder that clean baseball matters. Toronto finished with 11 hits, four extra-base hits, five walks and two batters hit, so the lineup created traffic all afternoon. Kirk’s three RBIs gave the game a center, while Bateman, Guerrero Jr., Springer and Gimenez all helped keep innings moving. But 16 runners left on base and two ground-ball double plays tell you there was still room to make the Orioles pay even more decisively. Add in the three errors, one of which directly produced Baltimore’s first run, and the Blue Jays have an obvious area to tighten even on a winning day.

Our take on Baltimore is harsher, because the path back into this game was visible and still not enough. The Orioles got two walks from Alonso and his seventh-inning homer gave them a pulse, yet the broader line reads thin: a .176 team average, 11 strikeouts and 10 men left on base. On the mound, the combination of 11 hits allowed, five walks and two hit batters gave Toronto far too many free chances, especially after Bradish’s three-inning start. The Orioles did get useful relief work from Grant Wolfram and Luis De Leon, and Anthony Nunez missed bats in one and two-thirds innings, but the early damage and the shortage of consistent offense made the 7-3 final feel fair.
