George Springer’s four-RBI day powers Blue Jays past Orioles as fifth-inning homers break it open

At Rogers Centre, the Toronto Blue Jays turned a brief tie into an 8-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles with the cleanest combination baseball offers: strikeouts on the mound and extra-base damage at the plate. George Springer supplied the biggest swing count, but Toronto’s control of the game came in two sharp bursts.

The tie disappeared under three loud swings

Toronto’s first run arrived in the second inning and looked, for a while, as if it might be enough to script a tight afternoon. Andres Gimenez doubled to left to bring home Charles McAdoo, giving the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead while Dylan Cease went to work piling up strikeouts. Baltimore did answer in the fifth, and it came from two of its productive bats: Dylan Beavers reached, and Pete Alonso singled to right to score him and pull the Orioles even at 1-1.

What followed was the game’s defining turn. The Blue Jays answered the tie in the bottom of the fifth with three solo home runs, each one changing the shape of the afternoon a little more. Springer drove one to right-center at 375 feet. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. followed with a 350-foot shot to left. Kazuma Okamoto added a 410-foot drive to left. In one inning, a deadlock became a 4-1 Toronto lead, and Baltimore’s room for error narrowed dramatically.

The Orioles still had innings left, but the Blue Jays saved their clinching punch for the eighth. Nathan Lukes scored when Brett Bateman drew a walk, with Myles Straw advancing to second and Brandon Valenzuela to third. Then Springer delivered the biggest hit of the day, a double to center that scored Bateman, Valenzuela and Straw. That one swing turned a manageable three-run deficit into the final 8-1 margin, and it gave Springer four RBIs on a day when Toronto kept finding the extra base.

Cease set the tone, and the bullpen kept Baltimore there

Cease’s line was not neat, but it was forceful: five innings, four hits, one run, five walks and nine strikeouts over 94 pitches. That is a lot of traffic for one run, and it is also a reminder of why raw baserunner counts do not tell the whole story. Baltimore kept getting men aboard, yet Cease repeatedly ended plate appearances himself. The Orioles finished the game with nine hits and six walks, but Toronto’s pitchers struck out 15, and that swing-and-miss edge kept the visitors from building sustained scoring innings.

The quieter achievement for the Blue Jays was what happened after Cease exited. Ricky Tiedemann, Braydon Fisher, Mason Fluharty, Tyler Rogers and Michael Lorenzen covered the final four innings without allowing a run. It was not a spotless relay line — Baltimore collected five hits and a walk against the relievers — but Toronto kept every late-inning threat from turning into a second run. That matters in a game that was only 4-1 entering the eighth, because it preserved the space for the offense to finish the job.

From the Orioles’ side, the contrast was sharp. Trevor Rogers gave Baltimore six innings, but three of Toronto’s seven hits against him left the park. He struck out five and issued only one walk, yet the damage came in concentrated form. Yaramil Hiraldo then had a difficult eighth, allowing four runs in 1.2 innings and walking four. Baltimore did get good individual work at the plate from Alonso, who went 3-for-5 with the lone RBI, from Beavers, who had two hits and a walk, and from Gunnar Henderson, who drew three walks. But as a lineup, the Orioles produced only one extra-base hit and no home runs, and that left too much of the scoring burden on singles.

Our take: Toronto’s blueprint looked convincing, even with some untidy edges

This is the kind of Blue Jays win that reads as more than a one-off box score. Toronto did not need one strange bounce or one defensive mistake from Baltimore — there were no errors by either club. The Jays won with elements that tend to travel from game to game: three home runs, six total extra-base hits, five walks, two stolen bases, and a pitching staff that struck out 15. Springer’s four RBIs will headline it, and rightly so, but Guerrero Jr.’s 4-for-5 afternoon and the inning-building work from Bateman, Lukes, Valenzuela and Straw made the attack look broader than one hot bat.

There is still something for both teams to clean up. For Toronto, the easiest place to look is the free pass total. Six Orioles walks and 163 pitches to finish a one-run opponent show that the Blue Jays were dominant without always being economical, and tighter opponents can do more with that many baserunners. For Baltimore, the problem was sharper: nine hits and six walks usually demand more than one run, but 15 strikeouts and only one extra-base hit kept the offense from stacking pressure. That is why the 8-1 score felt earned rather than inflated. The Blue Jays hit for power, missed bats, and when the game offered a chance to break open, they took it fully.
