Rangers’ three-run seventh turns a tight game into a 7-3 win over the Red Sox

For six innings, this felt like a game Boston might steal on one swing and one strange break. By the end, Texas had turned it into a lesson in sustained traffic, piling up 13 hits and using a three-run seventh inning to pull away for a 7-3 win at Globe Life Field.

A one-swing edge wasn’t enough

Boston grabbed the sharpest early moment of the night when Willson Contreras homered to left-center in the first inning, bringing home Wilyer Abreu for a 2-0 lead. On a night when the Red Sox would finish with only three hits, that swing did an enormous amount of work. It accounted for two of their three runs and, for a while, gave them the look of a club that might survive on efficiency rather than volume.

Texas answered before the game could settle. Jake Burger’s ground-rule double in the bottom of the first scored Justin Foscue and cut the deficit to 2-1, the first sign that the Rangers were going to keep forcing Boston’s pitching staff back into traffic. They kept leaning that way in the fourth, when Foscue singled to center to score Wyatt Langford and tie the game at 2-2.

Boston nudged back in front in the fifth when Caleb Durbin scored on a balk, but that edge lasted only until the bottom half of the inning. Langford’s single to center brought Josh Jung home and restored the tie at 3-3. That sequence mattered because it stripped Boston of its last lead without requiring a big Texas swing. The Rangers were building the game one extra baserunner and one line in the scorebook at a time.

Texas kept asking for one more hit

The Rangers’ offense never leaned on one star or one blast. It spread the work across the order and kept the game moving with contact. Texas finished with 13 hits, five of them doubles, and six different Rangers drove in runs. Jung led the way with a 3-for-5 night, while Foscue and Burger had two hits apiece. Corey Seager, Brandon Nimmo, Langford and Ezequiel Duran each delivered a scoring hit. In a 7-3 win without a home run, that kind of distribution is the story.

The decisive stretch came in the seventh. Nimmo doubled to center to score Seager and move Burger to third, pushing Texas ahead 4-3. Then Duran singled to left and drove in both Burger and Nimmo for a 6-3 margin. Boston had spent much of the night absorbing traffic while staying upright; in the seventh, that balancing act gave way. Seager’s RBI single in the eighth, scoring Alejandro Osuna, added the final run and made the Rangers’ persistence look even heavier on the scoreboard.

Boston’s line tells a very different story. The Red Sox drew three walks, had a hit batter and stole two bases, so this was not a completely empty offensive night. But they also left 13 men on base and managed just three hits total, with Contreras’ homer representing their only extra-base hit. Nick Sogard and Trevor Story supplied the other two hits. For long stretches, Boston found ways to get someone aboard without finding the next ball that would move the inning forward.

Our take: the Rangers won the cleaner version of this game

Texas did not play a flawless offensive game; the Rangers were charged with 21 runners left on base, which is a reminder that the same night could have broken open even earlier. Still, this result makes sense because Texas had far more chances and eventually stopped giving Boston windows. MacKenzie Gore’s four innings were uneven, with three walks and the Contreras homer helping Boston to three runs, but the bridge behind him changed the tone. Jakob Junis worked a scoreless inning with two strikeouts, and Nathan Eovaldi covered the final four innings while allowing just one hit and no runs. Over the last five innings, that pairing gave Boston almost nothing to build on.

For the Red Sox, the useful lesson is that this was not mainly a strikeout problem. Boston struck out only three times. The issue was what happened around those contact-heavy outs: too few clean hits, too little damage after reaching base, and not enough support for a strong opening swing from Contreras. On the other side, the Rangers can feel good about the breadth of their offense while still seeing room to sharpen the finish when they create this much traffic. The three-run seventh decided the game, but the larger point was simpler: Texas kept producing chances until Boston finally ran out of ways to escape them.
