Josh Allen’s late shot to Joshua Palmer carries Bills past Texans 36-31

Big plays kept bailing Buffalo out

The scoring arc told the story of why this one stayed unsettled. Tyler Bass opened with a 46-yard field goal at 7:28 of the first quarter, then Houston answered late in the period when David Montgomery scored from 1 yard out with 0:32 left. The second quarter turned frantic: Allen put Buffalo back ahead on a 21-yard touchdown run at 12:46, Montgomery replied with an 18-yard scoring run at 4:48, and the Bills answered again through Allen’s 1-yard plunge at 3:59. When Allen found DJ Moore for a 43-yard touchdown at 1:29, Buffalo had built what looked like a useful cushion, only for C.J. Stroud to hit Nico Collins from 12 yards with 0:26 remaining before halftime. The Bills led 24-21, but they never sounded in control for very long.

That is the odd beauty of Buffalo’s afternoon: the Bills were less persistent than Houston and more dangerous almost every time Allen let it rip. Buffalo ran only 52 plays to Houston’s 73, held the ball for just 23:43, and still produced 409 yards at 7.9 per play. Allen finished 20 of 29 for 334 yards, two touchdown passes, no interceptions and two rushing scores. Dalton Kincaid stretched the field and the seams for 130 yards on five catches, Moore added five catches for 100 yards and the 43-yard touchdown, and Palmer’s lone reception became the winning play. Buffalo did not need a flood of completions; it needed a few devastating ones.

There was, however, a catch to all that efficiency. Buffalo reached the red zone three times and scored one touchdown there, leaning on Bass to clean up the rest with field goals from 46, 34 and 33 yards. That is part of why the Bills’ statistical edge in explosiveness did not turn into separation. They moved the ball too well to leave the margin this thin, and Houston’s steadier style kept the game close enough for every fourth-quarter swing to matter.

Houston kept its hands on the game, until it didn’t

If the Texans are measuring this one honestly, they will see plenty that worked. Houston owned the clock at 36:17, collected 26 first downs, converted 7 of 16 third downs and rushed 32 times for 124 yards. Stroud was sharp enough, completing 26 of 38 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Montgomery carried 20 times for 60 yards and two rushing touchdowns, then added a 7-yard touchdown catch from Stroud at 13:34 of the fourth quarter to put Houston ahead 28-27. When Ka’imi Fairbairn drilled a 58-yard field goal with 6:44 left, the Texans had climbed in front again at 31-30. On volume, they gave themselves a winning script.

But this was the kind of script that leaves no room for carelessness, and Houston’s two turnovers were too expensive to survive. The Texans lost both of Stroud’s fumbles, while Buffalo finished without a turnover. In a five-point game, that gap is not background noise; it is the difference between controlling the afternoon and merely occupying it. Buffalo’s defense did not choke off Houston’s movement — the Texans were too productive for that claim — but Greg Rousseau’s two sacks, Deone Walker’s sack, and the fumble recoveries by Ed Oliver and Terrel Bernard gave the Bills just enough disruption to offset Houston’s possession edge.

One more answer, and lessons for both sides

The fourth quarter became a relay of counters. Bass’s 34-yard field goal at 4:24 of the third quarter had nudged Buffalo ahead 27-21, but Houston overtook that lead on Montgomery’s receiving touchdown early in the fourth. Bass answered from 33 yards at 10:31 for a 30-28 Bills lead, Fairbairn answered from 58 at 6:44 for a 31-30 Texans lead, and then Allen delivered the game’s last decisive strike. With 1:36 remaining, he found Palmer for a 34-yard touchdown. Buffalo’s two-point pass failed, which left the score at 36-31, but the essential truth was simpler: the Bills kept producing the game’s hardest punches.

Our take: Buffalo should leave encouraged by the ceiling and bothered by the clutter. The ceiling is obvious in 334 passing yards from Allen, 100-yard days from Moore and Kincaid-level production that broke the game open. The clutter is just as obvious in 10 penalties for 85 yards, only 3 conversions on 9 third downs, and one touchdown in three red-zone trips. When a team averages 7.9 yards per play and still needs a final-minute touchdown to escape, that usually means some of the trouble was self-inflicted.

Our take: Houston’s disappointment should be rooted less in style than in details. The Texans proved they could keep Buffalo’s offense on the sideline, score on four of five red-zone trips, and get useful work from Montgomery, Collins and Stroud. What they did not do was protect the ball or limit the explosive pass game. Buffalo averaged 10.4 net yards per team pass attempt, and Allen’s touchdown throws covered 43 and 34 yards. Add in seven penalties for 106 yards, and Houston gave back too many of the possessions it worked so hard to build. That is why this result feels like a Buffalo escape as much as a Buffalo statement: the Bills had the bigger plays, and in the NFL, sometimes that is enough to outrun the team that did more of everything else.
