Tyler Bass ends it in overtime as Bills edge Rams 37-34 at SoFi Stadium

Tyler Bass drilled a 45-yard field goal with 1:55 left in overtime, and the Buffalo Bills escaped SoFi Stadium with a 37-34 win over the Los Angeles Rams. Buffalo rode its running game for most of the night, then held on through a fourth quarter that changed hands repeatedly before Bass settled it.

Buffalo's running game carried the evening

Buffalo did not need a high-volume passing night from Josh Allen because the Bills kept moving the game on the ground. Bass supplied the first points with field goals from 49 and 23 yards for a 6-0 lead, and after Los Angeles moved ahead on Matthew Stafford's four-yard touchdown pass to Davante Adams, Buffalo answered quickly with James Cook's 17-yard scoring run to reclaim a 13-7 edge before halftime.

The Bills finished with 234 rushing yards on 37 attempts, and the split between Allen and Cook explained why Los Angeles never had a simple answer. Allen ran 10 times for 121 yards and a touchdown, while Cook handled 25 carries for 111 yards and two more scores. Buffalo averaged 6.3 yards per rush and 7.6 yards per play overall, a powerful combination for a team that ran only 57 offensive snaps.

Allen still delivered enough through the air to punish any overcommitment. He completed 12 of 19 passes for 210 yards, including a seven-yard touchdown to Keon Coleman in the third quarter. Khalil Shakir turned three catches into 80 yards, Ty Johnson added 72 on four receptions, and Buffalo punted only once all night. The offence was not methodical on third down, but it was dangerous whenever it found space.

The fourth quarter refused to settle

The Rams kept dragging the game back within reach and then beyond it. Blake Corum's one-yard run early in the third quarter pushed Los Angeles in front 14-13, only for Coleman to restore Buffalo's lead at 19-14 after Bass missed the extra point. At 14:16 of the fourth, Stafford found Puka Nacua from two yards out, and although the two-point try failed, the Rams were back in front, 20-19.

That edge lasted less than three minutes. Allen scored on a one-yard rush with 11:28 left and then hit Dalton Kincaid for the two-point conversion, giving Buffalo a 27-20 lead. Stafford answered again with a five-yard touchdown pass to Adams at 7:14 to tie it, Cook scored from five yards with 1:39 remaining to put the Bills ahead 34-27, and Kyren Williams forced overtime on a one-yard run with five seconds left in regulation.

Even in defeat, Los Angeles produced enough offence to win many nights. Stafford completed 40 of 54 passes for 383 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Nacua absorbed 24 targets and caught 17 balls for 138 yards and a score, Adams added two touchdowns, and Tyler Higbee chipped in 83 receiving yards. The Rams finished with 454 total yards, 33 first downs and a perfect 5-for-5 mark in the red zone, yet Bass still had the final word in overtime.

Our take: the numbers flatter nobody's mistakes

Buffalo will like the force of its running game and the fact it reached 37 points despite converting only two of seven third downs. The Bills also survived an interception, a lost fumble and 13 penalties for 112 yards, which is the kind of statistical clutter that usually ruins a road performance. What saved them was their ability to create bigger gains than Los Angeles could prevent. When a team rushes for 234 yards and scores three times on the ground, it can outlive a lot of untidy football.

The Rams have a clear case that their offence was good enough. They protected the ball, controlled possession for 37:57 and finished every red-zone trip with points. Still, two problems stand out in a three-point overtime loss. Los Angeles ran for only 77 yards at 3.3 per carry, which left Stafford carrying 54 attempts, and Harrison Mevis missed both field-goal tries. Defensively, the Rams also allowed 234 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. Those are not small leaks; against a quarterback-run game as productive as Buffalo's, they became the result.
