McDavid and Levi anchor Oilers’ 4-1 win over Flames at Rogers Place

A three-goal frame Calgary could not undo

Edmonton set the tone late in the first period and then widened the gap in the second. Zach Hyman opened the scoring at 16:46 of the first with a wrist shot, finishing a play created by Connor McDavid and Evan Bouchard. That goal gave the Oilers a lead they never surrendered, and it rewarded a period in which they were already beginning to tilt the puck their way.

The middle frame made the separation real. McDavid scored at 7:55 of the second on a snap shot, with Leon Draisaitl and Vasily Podkolzin collecting the assists, and Ryan Shea added another at 13:26 on a slap shot set up by Kasperi Kapanen and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. By the time Shea made it 3-0, Edmonton had converted steady territorial edges into something Calgary could finally see on the scoreboard.

Those edges were not overwhelming in one category alone, but they kept appearing everywhere. Edmonton finished with 29 shots to Calgary’s 24, won 61.1 per cent of the faceoffs, and blocked 23 shots. The Flames, meanwhile, were forced to chase more of the night, and their 24 giveaways made that task harder. In a rivalry game, that kind of sloppiness is a tax you usually pay sooner or later. Calgary paid it in the first 40 minutes.

Coronato gave the Flames a window, Kapanen closed it

Calgary did find one push in the third. Matt Coronato scored at 9:06 on a snap shot, with Matvei Gridin and Joel Farabee assisting, cutting the deficit to 3-1 and giving the Flames a reason to think about a late turn. Coronato’s three shots led Calgary’s goal scorers, and Farabee’s helper was one of the few moments in which the Flames turned possession into a clean finish.

The problem for Calgary was that the opening lasted only 1:46. Kapanen restored the three-goal margin at 10:52 of the third, beating Dustin Wolf with a wrist shot after Nugent-Hopkins and Mattias Ekholm moved the puck into position. That answer mattered as much as any goal Edmonton scored all night. It erased whatever momentum the Flames had managed to create and returned the game to the shape Edmonton had established earlier.

Levi took care of the rest. He stopped 23 of 24 shots for a .958 save percentage, including five saves against Calgary’s power play. The Flames did score once with the man advantage and went 1-for-3, but they never turned special teams into a true equalizer. Edmonton’s own power play was cleaner and more efficient, converting its only opportunity. In a four-goal game, that single finished chance stands out.

This was not just a night for star names, although McDavid and Draisaitl were in the middle of important offence again. Edmonton also received secondary scoring from Shea and Kapanen, plus a two-assist night from Nugent-Hopkins. That matters because the Oilers did not rely on one line to carry the result. Four different defenders recorded at least one blocked shot, six Edmonton skaters finished plus-1 or better, and the puck support showed up in the assist totals as much as in the final score.

For Calgary, the most obvious place to start is puck management. A team can survive losing the shot count by five. It is much harder to survive 24 giveaways, especially when it also loses the faceoff battle by more than 22 percentage points. The Flames did generate some individual work — Coronato scored, Gridin and Farabee produced assists, and Adam Klapka and Martin Pospisil each delivered five hits — but too many of their shifts were spent recovering from errors instead of building pressure.

Edmonton’s improvement point is subtler, because a 4-1 win does not erase everything. The Oilers gave Calgary three power plays and allowed a goal on one of them, so discipline remains worth monitoring even in a comfortable result. Still, the broader picture is favourable: they defended in volume, got timely scoring from top-end and supporting players, and answered the only real challenge to their lead almost immediately. On this night, that combination was more than enough, and it made the final score feel earned rather than accidental.
