Hurricanes break open Blackhawks with early second-period burst in 5-2 win

The Carolina Hurricanes turned a tight game into a controlled road win Saturday, beating the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2 at United Center after striking late in the first period and twice more in the opening 3:28 of the second. Five different Carolina skaters scored, and Chicago never got the margin below three after that surge.

The game tilted before the first intermission had cooled

For most of the opening period, Chicago kept the scoreboard clean. Carolina changed that with 57 seconds left in the frame, when Mark Jankowski beat Spencer Knight with a wrist shot at 19:03. Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Eric Robinson supplied the assists, and the timing mattered as much as the finish. Instead of reaching the break even, the Blackhawks went into the room trailing and immediately faced a more aggressive second-period script.

Carolina then delivered the sequence that decided the night. Sebastian Aho doubled the lead at 2:09 of the second period on a wrist shot set up by K'Andre Miller. Just 1:19 later, Jackson Blake made it 3-0, converting with Logan Stankoven and Jordan Martinook on the play. In a span of 4:25 of game time stretching from late in the first into the early second, the Hurricanes moved from a tense 0-0 game to full control at 3-0.

Every Chicago answer was met by another Carolina goal

Chicago did find a reply, and it arrived quickly enough to offer a pulse. Roman Kantserov scored unassisted at 4:40 of the second period, cutting the deficit to 3-1. But the Blackhawks never managed to turn that moment into a longer swing. Carolina restored the three-goal cushion only 1:25 later, when Taylor Hall scored at 6:05 off assists from Blake and Mike Reilly.

That pattern held into the third. Martinook pushed the score to 5-1 at 5:00, finishing a backhand chance with Nikolaj Ehlers and Reilly earning assists. Oliver Moore got one back for Chicago at 14:14, with Wyatt Kaiser and Ryan Donato on the setup, but by then the game had long since settled into Carolina's hands. Chicago scored twice on the night; Carolina answered the first goal almost immediately and had already built enough of a cushion that the second never changed the result's direction.

Depth carried Carolina, while Knight faced a heavy night

The Hurricanes did not need one player to dominate the scoresheet. They received goals from Jankowski, Aho, Blake, Hall and Martinook, with Blake and Martinook each adding an assist. Reilly finished with two assists from the blue line, while Miller, Stankoven, Kotkaniemi, Robinson and Ehlers all chipped in one. That spread mattered because it kept pressure coming from different parts of the lineup rather than from a single scoring line.

Brandon Bussi handled the rest with a steady 24-save performance on 26 Chicago shots for a .923 save percentage. At the other end, Knight stopped 34 of 39, a workload that says plenty about how often Carolina tested him. The Blackhawks generated some individual volume — Patrick Kane recorded five shots, while Kantserov and Donato each had three — but not enough sustained finishing to erase the early damage.

Our take: Carolina stacked its advantages early and never gave them back

The cleanest explanation for this result is the scoring sequence itself. Carolina struck at 19:03 of the first period, then again at 2:09 and 3:28 of the second, and that three-goal climb forced Chicago to chase from there. When the Blackhawks finally interrupted the run at 4:40 of the second, the Hurricanes answered at 6:05. Those are the moments that turned a competitive game into a managed one. Carolina also finished with edges in shots, 39-26, and faceoff percentage, 55.6 to 44.4, which helped keep the night pointed the same way.

There is still room for refinement on both benches. Carolina scored five times, but 20 giveaways and an 0-for-2 power play are numbers the Hurricanes will not want to carry too often. Chicago's list is more urgent: 39 shots against, 24 giveaways and a 44.4 per cent faceoff rate left too much of the evening in recovery mode. Knight's 34 saves kept the score respectable for long stretches, but the Blackhawks need to reduce that volume against if they want games like this to stay within reach longer.
