Harold Fannin Jr. delivers late again as Browns edge Panthers 21-18

Carolina chipped away until the score turned

For nearly three quarters, Carolina looked like the side doing more of the offensive work, even if the scoreboard did not fully reward it. Cleveland opened the scoring on Andre Szmyt's 48-yard field goal with 5:43 left in the second quarter, then stretched the margin to 10-0 when Watson found Fannin from two yards out at 1:37. The Panthers at least trimmed the halftime deficit when Ryan Fitzgerald drilled a 35-yarder with 27 seconds left in the half.

That kick started a long Carolina climb. Fitzgerald added from 41 yards early in the third quarter and from 53 yards with 3:17 left in the period, turning a two-score game into a 10-9 grind. When he connected again from 37 yards at 11:41 of the fourth, Carolina had finally moved in front, 12-10, behind a perfect four-for-four day from its kicker.

That stretch captured the game neatly: the Panthers were able to move the ball, but they had to settle too often. Bryce Young finished 26 of 48 for 291 yards with one touchdown and one interception, and Carolina produced 360 total yards and 24 first downs. Cleveland, meanwhile, was less productive between the 20s but stayed close enough through its kicking game, its rushing output and a defence that made Carolina work for every finish.

Fannin turned the last opening into the winning one

Cleveland briefly answered Carolina's run with Szmyt's 45-yard field goal at 7:30 of the fourth quarter, reclaiming the lead at 13-12. Even then, the Browns still had not shown much margin for error through the air. Watson would finish with 144 passing yards and two touchdowns, but both scoring throws went to the same target, and the passing game remained compact rather than explosive.

Carolina looked ready to close it when Young hit John Metchie III for an eight-yard touchdown with 4:25 left. The Panthers did not add the two-point conversion, leaving the score at 18-13. In a five-point game, that miss mattered. Carolina had finally found the end zone after four Fitzgerald field goals, but it still left Cleveland one touchdown away from stealing the afternoon.

The Browns took that chance. With 1:48 left, Watson found Fannin again, this time from 14 yards, and Cleveland did not stop there. Watson connected with Boston on the two-point try for a 21-18 lead. Fannin's line — seven catches, 51 yards and both touchdowns — gave Cleveland its clearest offensive answer all day. Watson also added 45 rushing yards, while Quinshon Judkins supplied 70 more on 18 carries, enough support to keep the Browns within reach until the final drive arrived.

Our take: Cleveland finished the possessions Carolina wasted

The stat sheet will frustrate Carolina because it shows a game the Panthers could have won. They outgained Cleveland 360-259, ran 74 plays to the Browns' 63 and held a 24-17 edge in first downs. Young spread the ball around, with Brycen Tremayne leading the receivers at 83 yards, Darren Waller adding 51 and Metchie scoring the lone touchdown. Yet the Panthers went just 1-for-3 in the red zone and 0-for-3 on fourth down. A day with that much movement and only one touchdown is the kind of inefficiency that keeps a better yardage total from becoming a result.

Cleveland's offensive numbers were thinner, but the Browns were sharper in the places that decided the score. They went 2-for-3 in the red zone and 2-for-3 on fourth down, rushed for 132 yards and did not give away an interception. The Browns did lose one fumble and were flagged 12 times for 84 yards, which is the sort of sloppiness that usually costs more heavily than it did here. What saved them was timely execution, plus a defence that produced three sacks, including two from Mason Graham, and an interception by Ronnie Hickman.

There is a clear lesson for both sides, and it does not require overstatement. Carolina's offence showed it can build drives, but the next improvement has to come at the scoring end after four field goals and one late touchdown. Cleveland can feel good about a comeback built on nerve and conversion, yet 259 total yards and a pass game in which Fannin accounted for both touchdowns suggest there is still room for more week-to-week consistency. On this day, though, the Browns did not need a polished performance. They needed one clean finish at the end, and they got it.
