The tie game that kept tilting Chicago’s way
Carolina opened with a clean statement. Bryce Young found Chuba Hubbard for a 4-yard touchdown at 11:33 of the first quarter, and for a moment the afternoon looked as if it might belong to the home side’s passing game. Chicago answered by putting the ball in Caleb Williams’ hands as a runner. His 9-yard touchdown rush at 5:52 tied it, and Swift’s 1-yard plunge at 1:59 pushed the Bears in front 14-7.
The second quarter became the game in miniature: every surge met by another. Williams hit Cole Kmet for a 22-yard score at 13:57 to make it 21-7, but the Panthers came right back through Young and Jalen Coker, first on a 51-yard strike at 12:40 and then on Young’s own 7-yard touchdown run at 8:42. Field goals from Cairo Santos and Ryan Fitzgerald pulled the score even at 24-24, and then Chicago found the half’s most important snap anyway. With 22 seconds left, Williams broke loose for a 29-yard rushing touchdown and restored the Bears’ edge at 31-24.
Carolina’s last full reset came at 9:02 of the third quarter, when Hubbard’s 2-yard run tied the score at 31-31. After that, Chicago’s offense stopped sharing. Swift punched in another 1-yard score at 3:05, Monangai ripped off a 61-yard touchdown with 40 seconds left in the quarter, and Jahdae Walker added a 1-yard catch from Williams at 6:27 of the fourth. Coker’s second touchdown, an 8-yarder at 4:00, kept Carolina visible, but the blocked extra point left the Panthers short of real pressure. Swift’s 28-yard touchdown run 20 seconds later closed the argument.
Chicago’s running game changed the math
The headline number was not subtle: 291 rushing yards, 39 attempts, 7.5 yards per carry, six rushing touchdowns. Swift supplied the repeated finish with 124 yards and three scores on 18 carries. Monangai added 100 yards on just 10 attempts and turned his biggest touch into a 61-yard touchdown. Williams made Carolina defend the quarterback as well, carrying 10 times for 65 yards and two scores. This was not one hot hand. It was a parade.
That ground production also made everything else easier. Williams was sharp through the air, completing 21 of 29 passes for 269 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Chicago finished with 552 total yards, converted 10 of 14 third downs and went a perfect 4-for-4 in the red zone. The Bears held the ball for 34:03 and only had to punt twice. Even with a lost fumble and 12 penalties, the offense kept returning to the same truth: Carolina never consistently forced it off schedule.
The Panthers were far from lifeless on offense. Young threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns, Coker erupted for eight catches and 138 yards, and Tetairoa McMillan added 75 more. Hubbard contributed both as a runner and receiver, finishing with 87 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns. Carolina also went 4-for-4 in the red zone. But the broader math was different. The Panthers had the ball for less time, converted only 4 of 9 third downs, and gave away three possessions through two lost fumbles and an interception. In a game where both teams could score, that was too much leakage.
Our take: points everywhere, but not the same kind of control
Our take: Chicago’s offense looked less like a one-week outburst than a structural problem Carolina could not solve. When a defense gives up 291 rushing yards and allows 10 third-down conversions on 14 chances, it is surrendering more than highlights. It is surrendering control of the afternoon. The Bears could finish short drives with Swift, strike from distance with Monangai, and still let Williams play efficiently as both passer and runner.
For Chicago, though, the score should not hide the warning lights. Allowing 478 total yards and 37 points is a lot of generosity for a winner, and Carolina’s passing game found chunk plays all day. Young averaged 9.8 yards per attempt, Coker scored twice, and Jonathon Brooks chipped in a 48-yard catch. Add in 12 penalties for 57 yards, and there is a clear area for improvement: fewer free yards and better answers when opponents start landing explosive passes.
For Carolina, the offensive production is real enough to keep, but the cleanup list is just as clear. A team that scores 37 points and is perfect in the red zone should not lose by 22, and the reason sits in the hidden plays. The Panthers lost two fumbles, threw an interception and committed 11 penalties for 84 yards, while their defense stayed on the field through Chicago’s 10-for-14 third-down day. That is the difference between a shootout and a chase.
