Horvat's late first-period strike sends Islanders past Blackhawks 4-1

Bo Horvat broke a scoreless game with 59 seconds left in the first period, and the New York Islanders turned that opening into a 4-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday at UBS Arena. Emil Heineman and Anthony Duclair stretched the lead in the second before the teams traded third-period goals.

Horvat breaks the deadlock at 19:01

For most of the opening period, this game stayed level. Then the Islanders found the moment that changed the night. Horvat snapped home his third goal of the season at 19:01 of the first, with Matthew Schaefer collecting the assist, and New York carried a 1-0 lead into intermission instead of taking a scoreless game back to the room.

That late conversion mattered because it let the Islanders play from in front and gave Chicago an immediate deficit to solve. The Blackhawks finished with more shots overall, 21-15, but the first breakthrough belonged to New York, and the rest of the evening followed that turn.

Two second-period goals opened the game

The Islanders did not wait long in the second to press the advantage. Emil Heineman made it 2-0 at 6:44, finishing a play set up by Matias Maccelli and Adam Pelech. It was a clean extension of the lead and another reminder that New York did not need a high shot total to make its chances count.

Less than three minutes later, the margin grew again. Anthony Duclair scored at 9:38 of the second, with Logan Stanley and Jean-Gabriel Pageau drawing the assists, and the Islanders suddenly had a 3-0 cushion. From there, Chicago was chasing a game that had tilted decisively against it.

The third period did not bring a full comeback push. The teams split the final 20 minutes 1-1, which preserved the three-goal gap and closed the night at 4-1. Even without every late scoring detail available in the game summary, the shape of the finish is clear: New York built separation by the middle of the game and never let the margin shrink to a single goal.

The details behind the margin

The clearest numerical edge came in the faceoff circle. The Islanders won 26 draws and finished at 61.9 per cent, while the Blackhawks were at 38.1 per cent. Horvat drove that advantage with nine faceoff wins and a 75 per cent success rate, while Pageau added nine wins of his own. Those extra possessions do not guarantee control of a game, but they do remove some of the scramble from protecting a lead.

New York also played the heavier game. The Islanders recorded 24 hits to Chicago's 12 and blocked 11 shots to the Blackhawks' five. Horvat was part of that tone as well, adding four hits to his goal, while Pageau and Brayden Schenn each had three hits for New York. When a team scores first, wins draws and doubles its opponent in hits, it usually gives itself a sturdier path through the middle stages of the night.

Special teams added another layer to the result. The Islanders converted once on two power-play opportunities, while the Blackhawks went 0-for-3. In a game decided by three goals, that difference mattered. Chicago also finished with 15 giveaways, and while New York had 20 of its own, the Islanders were better in the areas that most directly shaped the score: faceoffs, finishing and special teams.

Our take

This was an efficient Islanders win rather than a volume-based one. New York scored four times on 15 shots, and the first three goals came from three different scorers: Horvat, Heineman and Duclair. Schaefer, Maccelli, Pelech, Stanley and Pageau all appeared on the scoresheet as helpers on those goals. That spread matters. It suggests an attack that did not rely on one line carrying the full burden, and it matched the broader team profile of the night: strong on draws, committed physically and good enough on the power play to widen the gap.

For Chicago, the shot count offers only partial comfort. Outshooting the Islanders 21-15 should have created more pressure on the scoreboard than a single third-period goal. The cleaner lessons are elsewhere. The Blackhawks need more from their power play than 0-for-3, and they need to cut down the faceoff deficit that kept sending the puck back to New York. When a team loses the dots that badly and still cannot cash its extra-man chances, it has to be nearly perfect at even strength. Chicago was not, and the Islanders made sure the opening mistake on the scoreboard became the final story of the night.
