Alex Bregman’s two home runs and four RBIs carry Cubs past Red Sox 6-2

Bregman set the game’s shape in the first three innings

The Cubs did not need long to hand the afternoon to their hottest bat. With Tyrone Taylor aboard in the first inning, Bregman drove a 417-foot home run to left-centre for a 2-0 lead. Boston answered in the bottom half through Adley Rutschman, whose 402-foot solo shot to left trimmed the deficit to one, and the Red Sox pulled even in the second when Andruw Monasterio grounded into a fielder’s choice that brought home Nick Sogard while Trevor Story was retired at second.

That tie lasted only one inning. Bregman came up again in the third and sent another ball out to left, this time a solo homer, to restore the Cubs’ lead at 3-2. From there, Chicago spent most of the day trying to turn steady traffic into breathing room. The Cubs finished with 13 hits and five extra-base hits, but they also left 13 runners on base, which kept Boston within striking distance until the ninth.

Even with those missed chances, Chicago had enough support around Bregman to keep pressure on the Red Sox staff. Taylor scored twice, Miguel Amaya collected two hits and later crossed the plate in the ninth, and Michael Conforto added two hits before delivering the final run-scoring swing. Bregman still towered over the box score. Four hits in four at-bats, three runs and four RBIs is the kind of line that can carry an entire game story by itself.

Boston stayed close, but the offence never found a second push

The Red Sox had their opening, and for a while they used it well enough to make this a proper one-run game. Rutschman’s first-inning homer gave Boston an immediate answer, and the second-inning fielder’s choice from Monasterio tied the score at 2-2. After that, though, the offence stalled. Boston finished with five hits, three walks and 15 runners left on base, and two double plays cut off innings that might have grown into something more substantial.

Chicago’s pitching did not overpower Boston all day, but it prevented any sustained follow-up after the second inning. Shota Imanaga worked the first, allowed the Rutschman homer and struck out three. Braxton Garrett then covered five innings, giving up four hits and one run while walking three and striking out two. Once Garrett handed it over, Jacob Webb and Colin Rea closed the door completely with three scoreless innings, allowing no hits and no walks between them.

That pitching line explains the shape of the afternoon. Boston had enough baserunners to stay in contact, but not enough authority at the plate to move the game back in its direction. Aside from Rutschman’s homer, the Red Sox produced no extra-base hit at all. In a game where the Cubs managed 22 total bases and Boston had eight, the margin in quality contact was hard to ignore.

For most of the afternoon, the score suggested a coin flip. The ninth showed something else. Amaya came home on Bregman’s double to centre, Taylor moved to third and then scored on Gabriel Arias’s sacrifice fly to left. Conforto followed with a double to right that scored Bregman and pushed the lead to 6-2. It was not a sudden outburst from nowhere so much as the inning in which Chicago finally cashed more of the traffic it had been creating all day.

That is the encouraging part for the Cubs and the cautionary note. The lineup produced 13 hits, worked three walks and forced Boston’s pitchers to throw 187 pitches, all strong indicators of a productive day. But leaving 13 runners on base is also why a game they had largely controlled stayed tense into the final inning. Against a deeper offensive club, that inefficiency could be punished more sharply than it was here.

For Boston, the lessons are more direct. The Red Sox gave up two Bregman home runs in the first three innings, allowed three doubles overall and needed 187 pitches to get through nine innings. At the plate, they saw only 112 pitches, managed five hits and turned too many opportunities into stranded runners. There was enough early resistance to keep this game alive, but not enough sustained offence or run prevention to keep it level once Chicago came back for one more scoring turn.
