Crow-Armstrong sparks five-run third as Cubs roll past Reds 9-1

The inning that tilted everything

Chicago’s first run was a warning more than a breakthrough. Pete Crow-Armstrong opened the scoring by coming home on Alex Bregman’s single to left in the first inning, and that early edge mattered because it put Cincinnati in chase mode almost immediately. Crow-Armstrong was at the center of that pressure all afternoon, finishing 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a two-run homer.

The game truly changed in the third. Ian Happ singled home Crow-Armstrong for a 2-0 lead, Nico Hoerner then drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Michael Busch, and the inning kept stretching after Chicago successfully challenged the call on that play. Pedro Ramirez followed with the sharpest blow of the frame, a single to center that brought in Bregman and Happ for a 5-0 margin. In one inning, the Cubs turned a manageable game into one controlled by traffic, patience and line-drive contact.

That sequence also showed why the Cubs’ offense looked deeper than the final score alone. Bregman reached twice in limited at-bats, Happ added two hits, Hoerner mixed a hit with an RBI walk, and Ramirez supplied three hits with two RBI from the lower portion of the lineup. Chicago did not rely on one hot spot; it kept passing the inning along until Cincinnati could not stop the spill.

Power after Cincinnati answered

JJ Bleday gave the Reds their one clean swing of consequence with a solo homer to right-center in the fourth, trimming the deficit to 5-1. Whatever brief opening that created disappeared in the next inning. Michael Conforto answered with a solo shot of his own to right-center, and later in the fifth Crow-Armstrong drove a 411-foot homer to center that also scored Ramirez. When Seiya Suzuki added a 440-foot drive to center in the eighth, the Cubs had scored nine runs in four separate innings and answered Cincinnati’s only run with four of their own.

The most telling part of Chicago’s day may have been that the Cubs paired that power with steady volume. They finished with 13 hits, four walks and 24 total bases, so the three home runs were only part of the story. Cincinnati pitchers did strike out 10, but the contact they allowed was costly: Rhett Lowder gave up five runs in 3.0 innings, and Carson Spiers surrendered three homers across 4.0 innings. Strikeouts can tidy an inning; they do not erase repeated hard damage on the scoreboard.

Peterson set the floor, and the bullpen kept it there

The Cubs’ offense made the afternoon comfortable, but David Peterson made sure it never became complicated. Peterson worked 6.0 innings and allowed only three hits, one run and one walk while striking out seven. The only blemish was Bleday’s homer. Everything else in his line points to control: 83 pitches, 54 strikes, and very few free chances for a Cincinnati lineup that finished with a .156 on-base percentage.

After Peterson, Chicago got exactly what a lopsided game asks from a bullpen: nothing memorable for the opponent. Caleb Thielbar, Edward Cabrera and Colin Rea covered the final three innings, allowing one hit and no runs. The Reds finished with only four hits total, and only Elly De La Cruz, Matt McLain, Will Banfield and Bleday recorded them. Cincinnati did steal two bases when it managed to reach, but there simply were not enough runners to turn pressure into a comeback.

Our take: a convincing Cubs formula, and a thin Reds margin

Our take: this was the Cubs at their most convincing when they do not wait around for the perfect inning. They scored early, built a crooked number in the third, and still had enough length to add on later. The only real nitpick from Chicago’s side is that 16 runners were left on base and the club also committed an error. On another day, that combination can keep an opponent alive much longer. The fix is not abstract: the Cubs created plenty of chances, and cleaner finishing with men aboard would make a strong offensive game look even stronger.

For the Reds, the numbers point to a narrower path. They had four hits, one walk and one extra-base hit all day, which left almost no cushion for the pitching staff. And once Chicago loaded the bases and forced traffic in the third, the inning got away in a hurry. Cincinnati can reasonably look first at creating more baserunners rather than waiting for the next long ball; a .129 average and .156 on-base percentage are too small a platform to support much else. Just as important, limiting those multi-run innings has to be part of the response, because the Cubs turned a close game into a rout before the middle innings had fully arrived.
