Padres pair early run bursts with deep bullpen effort in 4-1 win over Cubs

Two clean scoring bursts were enough

San Diego's first push came in the second inning, and it was built the straightforward way: men on base, a ball through the infield, then a productive out. Xander Bogaerts singled to right to bring home Ty France for the opening run, with Jackson Merrill advancing to third. Ethan Salas followed with a sacrifice fly to centre, and a quiet game had its first real shape at 2-0.

Chicago cut the margin in the fourth. Seiya Suzuki scored on Nico Hoerner's single to centre, with Ian Happ moving to second, and for a moment the Cubs had turned the night into a one-run game. That opening lasted only the bottom half of the inning. Gavin Sheets drove a 394-foot homer to right, Bogaerts scored in front of him, and the Padres were back in command at 4-1.

That sequence also captured the difference between the clubs. San Diego did not flood the box score, but it clustered its best swings into two innings and made them count. France finished 2-for-4 and scored once, Merrill went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run, Bogaerts had two hits, an RBI and a run, and Sheets supplied the game's only home run in his lone at-bat.

Chicago created chances but never turned them into a rally

The Cubs had more traffic than the final score suggests. They drew three walks, added a hit batter and left 15 runners on base, yet could not build beyond Hoerner's RBI single. Chicago managed five hits in 31 at-bats, struck out eight times and produced only one extra-base hit, a thin return for a lineup that still forced San Diego pitchers to work through 146 pitches.

Nick Pivetta did not stay long enough to settle into a conventional starter's line, but he kept the damage to one run over 3.1 innings and struck out four. From there, San Diego's relievers did the heavier lifting. Bradgley Rodriguez covered 1.2 hitless innings with two strikeouts, Jason Adam recorded a clean sixth, Adrian Morejon handled two scoreless innings, and Mason Miller closed the ninth with two strikeouts.

Hoerner's 2-for-4 night stood out on the Chicago side, and Suzuki accounted for the Cubs' only run. Carson Kelly and Tyrone Taylor added the other hits after Chicago's top of the order went quiet. Pete Crow-Armstrong, Alex Bregman and Dansby Swanson combined to go 0-for-11, and that left the Cubs too dependent on single-run opportunities.

Our take: efficient baseball beat incomplete baseball

This was not an overwhelming Padres performance, but it was an efficient one. San Diego drew only one walk and struck out six times, yet eight hits were enough because the scoring came in well-timed pockets and the bullpen protected every inch of the lead. The Padres also played a clean defensive game, matching Chicago with zero errors and removing any route back into the game through free mistakes.

The Cubs can point to one encouraging number: they made San Diego throw 146 pitches in nine innings. But a long count total only matters if it leads to harder contact or a breakthrough inning, and neither arrived often enough here. Five hits, no home runs and 15 runners left on base describe a night in which the opportunities were real, but the finishing was not.

Chicago's own relief work at least kept the score from getting away. After Kevin Gausman allowed three earned runs in 3.1 innings, Daniel Palencia surrendered the Sheets homer, then David Peterson and Ryan Zeferjahn combined for three scoreless innings with three strikeouts. That gave the Cubs time to respond; San Diego's pitchers simply never gave them the big swing they needed.
