Six-run sixth sends White Sox past Guardians as Miguel Vargas caps the break with a two-run homer

For five innings at Progressive Field, this game sat quietly. Then the Chicago White Sox found one opening, kept it moving, and turned a close night into a 7-3 win over the Cleveland Guardians with a six-run sixth inning that decided almost everything.

One inning changed the night

The White Sox did not spend the evening overwhelming Cleveland from first pitch to last. They struck out 14 times, and for a long stretch this looked like the kind of game that would stay within one swing. What Chicago did do, though, was keep feeding the inning with enough traffic to make one mistake expensive. By the end of the night, the White Sox had seen 198 pitches, drawn five walks and taken three hit batters. That is a lot of pressure for a pitching staff to absorb, even in a game where the strikeout total looks impressive.

The break came all at once in the sixth. Colson Montgomery put the ball in play, and Andrew Benintendi came home when first baseman Nathaniel Lowe made a throwing error. That run mattered beyond the scoreboard because it cracked open an inning that Cleveland never got back under control. Chase Meidroth followed with a single to left to score Tristan Peters for a 2-0 lead, and Kyle Teel then doubled to left to bring home Montgomery and Meidroth. Chicago had gone from waiting for offense to stacking it, four runs at a time, with the inning still moving.

Then Vargas supplied the cleanest blow of the game. His homer to left, measured at 392 feet, scored Teel and pushed the score to 6-0. That sequence told the whole story of Chicago’s night: a defensive mistake by Cleveland, a couple of timely hits, and finally the one swing that made the inning feel permanent. The Guardians did get a run back in the bottom of the sixth when Patrick Bailey scored on a fielding error by Montgomery, but by then the shape of the game had already changed.

Chicago’s useful mix of power and prevention

The White Sox lineup did not need a parade of heroes, just enough meaningful work from the middle of the order and enough traffic around it. Benintendi finished 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI, the kind of line that quietly supports a breakout inning. Vargas was the headline bat at 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, and Teel’s night was built around one major swing, his two-run double that turned a lead into a cushion. Meidroth added an RBI single, and even hitters who did not fill the hit column still helped extend plate appearances and keep Cleveland’s staff working.

On the mound, Chicago’s staff gave the offense room to let that sixth inning matter. The White Sox allowed seven hits and two walks across nine innings while striking out seven, and the most striking number in their line was the earned-run column: zero. Cleveland scored three times, but none of those runs were earned, which says two things at once. Chicago pitched well enough to prevent sustained damage, and Chicago fielded sloppily enough to keep the Guardians faintly alive longer than necessary.

Sean Burke’s five innings were especially useful in that context. He allowed four hits, one run and no earned runs while striking out four. Hagen Smith added two scoreless innings with three strikeouts, helping keep Cleveland quiet through the late middle of the game. Trevor Richards gave up David Fry’s two-run homer in the ninth, but even that damage sat inside the larger truth of the night: Cleveland never found a clean offensive inning against Chicago. The Guardians’ only RBI came on Fry’s home run; their other run scored because of a White Sox error.

Our take: Cleveland handed over too much, and Chicago still has cleanup to do

Cleveland’s most frustrating takeaway is that the Guardians actually did enough swing-and-miss work to imagine a better outcome. Fourteen Chicago strikeouts should give any club a fighting chance. But that advantage was diluted by everything that came with it: five walks, three hit batters, 198 pitches thrown, and 43 White Sox batters faced. Add Lowe’s throwing error in the sixth and a wild pitch in the overall pitching line, and the Guardians made the White Sox earn some offense but also donated too many extra openings. When a team gives away that many baserunners, one bad inning can become six runs in a hurry.

The White Sox, for their part, should leave Cleveland pleased with the result and a little bothered by the untidiness. A 7-3 road win is solid work, but 14 strikeouts and 23 runners left on base say the offense still depended heavily on one explosion rather than steady control of the game. The defense also left fingerprints on Cleveland’s scoring. Chicago committed two errors, and all three Guardians runs were unearned. On another night, that sort of looseness can turn a comfortable margin into a tight finish.

That is why the sixth inning remains the lasting image. Chicago was the sharper team where it mattered most, punishing Cleveland immediately after the Guardians opened the door. Benintendi set the table, Teel widened the inning, Vargas finished it, and the pitching staff made sure that one burst would be enough. Cleveland’s path back into the game never became more than a brief flicker, and that is the clearest verdict any baseball game can offer.
