The White Sox found the big hit, but only once

For five innings, Chicago had the shape of a team that should have been in command. Chase Meidroth went 3-for-5. Randal Grichuk added two more hits. Tommy Pham supplied the game’s loudest answer to that point, a three-run homer to left-center in the fifth that erased Cleveland’s early lead and pushed the White Sox in front 3-2. On a night when the White Sox finished with eight hits, that swing should have been the start of something larger.

Instead, it stood alone. Chicago left 15 runners on base, and that number tells the story more clearly than the hit column does. Meidroth and Grichuk kept traffic moving, Kyle Teel and Munetaka Murakami each added a walk, and the White Sox even got a hit batter, but the lineup never turned that steady accumulation into a second scoring sequence. Against Parker Messick, they managed seven hits in six innings, yet he did not issue a walk and struck out eight. That matters. Cleveland kept forcing Chicago to earn everything with contact, and after the Pham homer, the White Sox could not string together the next damaging at-bat.

Cleveland’s patience changed the game before its power finished it

The Guardians were hardly overflowing with offense themselves. They finished with only five hits and a .167 team average. But Cleveland kept building plate appearances, drew six walks, and stayed close enough for one inning to tilt the game. Their first push came in the third, when Jo Adell singled to left to bring home Petey Halpin and Steven Kwan for a 2-0 lead. It was a modest inning on paper, but it put Chicago in catch-up mode until Pham’s homer flipped the score.

Then came the sixth, the inning that made the final score feel definitive. Halpin hit a three-run homer to right-center, scoring David Fry and Austin Hedges, and suddenly Cleveland had gone from trailing by one to leading by two. Jose Ramirez followed later in the inning with a double to left that scored Brayan Rocchio and moved Kwan to third, extending the lead to 6-3. The Guardians produced four runs in the frame without piling up hits all night, which is another way of saying they were ruthless with the chances they did create.

White Sox pitchers walked six for the game, and Sean Newcomb’s outing — no outs recorded, two hits, two walks, two earned runs, 20 pitches and only nine strikes — captures the loss of control at the worst possible time. Hagen Smith had already allowed two earned runs in 1.2 innings, and Cleveland’s hitters kept accepting the free bases that were there. The Guardians did not need a barrage; they needed one inning in which the strike zone became negotiable, and they got it.

Our take: Cleveland won the discipline contest

This is the kind of result that can tempt a lazy conclusion. Chicago out-hit Cleveland 8-5, so the easy line would be that baseball is random. Our take: this one was less random than it looks. The Guardians were cleaner in the areas that stabilize a game. They did not commit an error. Their pitchers struck out 10 and walked only two. Their starter, Messick, absorbed six innings and limited the damage to the one Pham homer. Chicago, by contrast, committed the game’s only error, saw Anthony Kay allow two unearned runs in four innings, and then watched the bullpen hand over too much control through walks.

For the White Sox, the improvement path is fairly plain even without pretending every problem has one neat fix. When a lineup produces eight hits, gets five from the top trio of Meidroth, Grichuk, and Miguel Vargas, and still scores only on one swing, the issue is not access to baserunners. It is sequencing. The same goes on the mound: six walks against a team that had only five hits gave Cleveland room to win without sustained contact. Fewer free passes late would have forced the Guardians to beat Chicago with more than one breakout inning.

For Cleveland, this was a useful reminder that run creation does not always need a flood of hits, but it also came with a caution label. The Guardians left 12 on base themselves, so this was not an offensive masterpiece. It was an efficient rescue operation, driven by patience and finished by Halpin’s homer and Ramirez’s double. That is enough on a night like this, especially when the bullpen closes the final three innings allowing just one hit. Against the White Sox, Cleveland did the sharper, harder thing: it made the smaller details decide the game.
