Murakami homer and five-pitcher shutout send White Sox past Guardians 3-0

One swing, then an insurance double

For most of the afternoon, this game moved like a pitchers’ duel that might turn on a single mistake. It did in the fourth inning. Miguel Vargas reached and Murakami followed by driving a 440-foot home run to right, a two-run shot that gave Chicago a 2-0 lead and immediately changed the leverage on every at-bat that followed.

Cleveland starter Parker Messick did enough elsewhere to keep the game respectable. He struck out six over 4.1 innings and limited Chicago to four hits, but Murakami’s homer was the defining blow. In a game where runs were scarce and neither club produced a sustained barrage, that swing carried unusual weight.

The White Sox did not pile on offensively. They finished with six hits, four walks and 10 team runners left on base, and they hit into two double plays. What they did manage was one more clean scoring play in the seventh, when Colson Montgomery doubled to left and brought home Kyle Teel for a 3-0 cushion. Montgomery finished 2-for-3, while Vargas scored once and reached base three times with a hit and two walks.

Chicago’s relay on the mound never cracked

The stronger story, though, was Chicago’s work on the mound. Five White Sox pitchers combined on the three-hit shutout, striking out 12 Guardians and holding Cleveland to a .103 average for the day. It was not a perfectly tidy effort — the staff walked five — but it was forceful, varied and effective from the first inning through the ninth.

Hagen Smith set the tone with 2.2 hitless innings at the start, although his three walks meant Cleveland had early traffic. Bryan Hudson recorded the final out of the third, Jordan Hicks covered two outs with two strikeouts, and Anthony Kay bridged the middle innings before Grant Taylor took over the finish.

Taylor’s four innings were the cleanest stretch Chicago produced. He allowed two hits, walked nobody and struck out six on just 42 pitches, closing the door on any late Cleveland push. That finish mattered because the Guardians did put 34 batters to the plate; they simply could not convert those opportunities into a crooked number, or even a single run.

Our take: Cleveland created traffic but not pressure

The White Sox earned this one with economy. They were not explosive, and the offensive line makes that plain. Ten strikeouts and 10 runners left on base are not the marks of a complete day at the plate. Still, Chicago stayed patient enough to see 149 pitches, got its biggest production from Murakami and Colson Montgomery, and made two extra-base hits stand up because the pitching staff never gave anything back.

Cleveland’s more frustrating number was not just the three hits. It was the combination of three hits, five walks and nine team runners left on base. That is enough traffic to threaten a game, especially one that remained 2-0 into the seventh, but the Guardians struck out 12 times and repeatedly ended innings before any pressure could build. Jo Adell’s four-strikeout line captured that problem in its sharpest form.

If Cleveland wants a practical lesson from this result, it starts with turning free baserunners into contact that forces the defence to work. Five walks should produce more than a quiet box score. For Chicago, the takeaway runs in the opposite direction: the pitching was good enough to win comfortably, but the offence still left room to grow after stranding 10. On this day, Murakami’s homer and a layered bullpen were more than enough.
