Sixth-inning surge lifts White Sox past Guardians after early Cleveland gift

An early mistake, then a long recovery

Cleveland took control before Chicago had a chance to settle. The Guardians scored twice in the first inning when Steven Kwan and José Ramírez both came home on a throwing error by pitcher Sean Newcomb, with Nathaniel Lowe reaching first and Jo Adell ending up at third on the play. It was a messy start for the White Sox, who had to turn immediately from damage control to survival.

They got there by piecing together innings from four pitchers. Anthony Kay lasted only one out, but Newcomb followed with two scoreless innings, Sean Burke gave the game shape with 5.1 innings of one-run work, and Grant Taylor handled the final four outs without allowing the tying run. Cleveland finished with only four hits, and that economy is what made Chicago's comeback possible.

The stranger part of the night is that the Guardians still wasted a strong start from Gavin Williams. He struck out 11 over five innings and threw 98 pitches, holding Chicago to four hits and two runs. The White Sox managed just one run against him, in the fourth, when Munetaka Murakami singled to right to score Kyle Teel and trim the deficit to 2-1. For five innings, it looked like Williams' swing-and-miss stuff would be enough.

One clean inning changed the game

Instead, the game turned quickly in the sixth. Chicago did not need a barrage; it needed sequencing. Miguel Vargas and Randal Grichuk both came around when Braden Montgomery doubled to right, pushing the White Sox in front 3-2. Chase Meidroth followed with a single to right that brought Montgomery home for a 4-2 lead.

That burst was the difference because neither club built much sustained offence all night. Chicago finished with only six hits, no home runs and 13 strikeouts, but the White Sox also forced four walks and kept creating traffic. They stranded 15 runners, which usually reads like a losing formula, yet the sixth inning was sharp enough to overcome everything left unfinished.

Montgomery's double gave him two RBIs on the night, Meidroth went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Murakami added the earlier run-scoring single. Vargas also mattered in quieter ways, reaching base three times with a hit and two walks and scoring once. On a night with little margin, those extra baserunners were as important as the hardest contact.

Our take: Chicago's pitchers stabilized the mess; Cleveland needed one more push

The White Sox earned this one less through offensive volume than through composure after the opening stumble. Once the first inning passed, Cleveland scored only once more, on Adell's eighth-inning triple to left that scored Chase DeLauter and cut the lead to 4-3. That late hit created tension, but Chicago's staff had already done the heavier work by quieting the game for six straight scoreless innings after the first.

Burke deserves special weight in that shift. His 5.1 innings, one run and six strikeouts gave Chicago exactly what it needed after the abrupt opening, and Taylor's clean finish preserved a game that never became comfortable. For the White Sox, the obvious area to clean up is efficiency: six hits, four walks and 15 runners left on base is too much waste to rely on every night. The comeback covered that flaw, not erased it.

For Cleveland, the frustration is different. The Guardians led 2-0 almost immediately, got an excellent strikeout performance from Williams and still lost because the offence stopped producing enough pressure. DeLauter had two of the club's four hits, Adell supplied the eighth-inning triple, and Kwan and Ramírez both scored, but the lineup as a whole finished with four hits, three walks and 12 runners left on base. In a 4-3 game, that is the distance between a fast start and a finish that never quite arrived.
