White Sox build early cushion, hold Astros off 6-3 at Daikin Park

The White Sox did not need a barrage of extra-base hits to take control. They put men on base immediately, forced Houston's staff to work, and turned that pressure into a lead that kept growing. Sam Antonacci crossed the plate on Munetaka Murakami's sacrifice fly in the first, then Antonacci delivered the first major swing of the night in the second with a single to left that brought home Braden Montgomery and Chase Meidroth for a 3-0 edge.

Chicago kept adding one layer at a time. Colson Montgomery drove a solo homer 432 feet to centre in the fourth, and Meidroth reached on an infield single in the fifth to score Murakami and make it 5-0. By then the White Sox had already shown the shape of their offence for the night: 11 hits, four walks, two hit batters and enough contact to stretch Houston through 42 plate appearances and 155 pitches.

Antonacci finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk, while Meidroth went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Murakami scored twice and drove in another, Braden Montgomery collected two hits, and Randal Grichuk added two more. Chicago produced only one extra-base hit all evening, but the lineup kept returning to first base and kept asking for another pitch.

Houston's reply arrived late

The Astros finally landed a direct answer in the fifth. Nelson Velázquez homered to left, a 388-foot shot that also scored Lucas Spence and cut the deficit to 5-2. For a moment, that swing gave Houston a clear route back into the game after being limited to scattered offence through the first four innings.

Chicago restored the three-run margin in the seventh when Murakami scored on a wild pitch from Bennett Sousa. Houston pulled one run back in the eighth as Jeremy Peña came home and Jose Altuve reached safely on a throwing error by third baseman Miguel Vargas, with Chicago challenging the call before it was upheld. That made it 6-3, but the Astros never found the big inning they needed.

Houston finished with six hits and two walks. Velázquez supplied the only extra-base hit and both of the club's batted-in runs. Peña, Yordan Alvarez, Isaac Paredes, Spence and Cam Smith each had one hit, while Altuve went 0-for-4 and Yainer Diaz finished 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. The Astros stayed in touch, but they never matched the steady traffic Chicago created.

Five arms stitched the game together

Chicago's pitching line looked less like one dominant outing than a well-managed relay. Hagen Smith opened with three scoreless innings and allowed only two hits. Jordan Hicks followed with 1 1/3 scoreless frames, and although Sean Newcomb gave up Velázquez's two-run homer, the White Sox never let that swing turn into a larger collapse.

David Sandlin covered 1 1/3 scoreless innings before Taylor handled the finish. Taylor struck out five over the final 2 1/3 innings, allowed two hits, and was charged with one unearned run. Altogether, White Sox pitchers held Houston to six hits, two earned runs and a .182 team average on the night.

Houston's bullpen had strikeout numbers of its own, but the damage came too early. AJ Blubaugh walked three in two-thirds of an inning, Bryan King was tagged for four hits and two earned runs while recording only one out, and Miguel Ullola surrendered Colson Montgomery's homer during an otherwise tidy three-inning stint. Bryan Abreu and Josh Hader each worked a scoreless inning, yet by then the Astros were already chasing the game Chicago had built in the opening half.

Our take: Chicago won with persistence more than power

There is something useful in the way the White Sox built this result. They hit only one homer, did not record a double, and still scored six times because the at-bats kept stacking up. Four walks, two hit batters, a sacrifice fly and a steady run of singles gave Chicago multiple ways to advance the score even with three ground-ball double plays working against them. That is not a flashy offensive profile, but it is a durable one for a single night.

For Houston, the missing piece was concentration of offence. The Astros saw 150 pitches, nearly matched Chicago's total there, but turned that volume into only six hits, two walks and one extra-base knock. Velázquez's homer changed the scoreboard, yet too much of the rest came one baserunner at a time. Add in the early walks from the mound and the seventh-inning wild pitch, and the Astros gave away too many small moments to recover cleanly.
