White Sox bury Royals early as Kyle Teel and David Sandlin drive 9-1 win at Kauffman

An opening punch Kansas City could not absorb

Chicago did not need long to define this game. In the first inning, Miguel Vargas singled home Sam Antonacci, Andrew Benintendi followed with a sacrifice fly that brought in Kyle Teel, and Tristan Peters added another run-scoring single. Just like that, the White Sox had a 3-0 lead, and the names at the center of it kept reappearing all night. Antonacci finished 2-for-5 with three runs scored, Teel went 2-for-2 with three runs, and Vargas scored twice while driving in two.

The second inning turned a fast start into a damaging one. One White Sox run crossed on a pickoff error charged to Royals starter Randy Dobnak, then Vargas singled in Antonacci again, and Munetaka Murakami brought Teel home on a fielder's choice. At 6-0 after two innings, Kansas City was already playing from underneath the kind of deficit that exposes every extra baserunner and every misplay. Dobnak's line captured the trouble: 1.1 innings, six runs allowed, four earned. The two Royals errors mattered because Chicago was already reaching often enough on its own.

Teel supplied the loudest swing, Sandlin handled the rest

The White Sox did not need a barrage of home runs, but they got one emphatic reminder that this game belonged to them when Teel drove a 424-foot shot to center in the fourth inning. Peters added another RBI in the same frame on a fielder's choice, pushing the lead to 8-0. Teel's stat line was compact and influential: two hits, a homer, a walk, an RBI and three runs scored. Benintendi, notably, drove in two runs without recording a hit, first on the sacrifice fly and later by drawing a walk that forced in Antonacci in the fifth.

Kansas City's lone answer came from Salvador Perez, whose 419-foot homer to left-center in the fourth put the Royals on the board. It was the only run Chicago allowed. David Sandlin gave the White Sox six innings of control, yielding five hits, one run, no walks and seven strikeouts. That no-walk detail matters. Kansas City managed seven hits in the game, but Sandlin did not compound them. Behind him, Huascar Brazoban struck out two in one inning, Tyler Davis struck out one in his inning, and Trevor Richards worked the final listed two-thirds of an inning without allowing a run.

Our take: Chicago earned the easy margin before the middle innings arrived

This was the kind of game a lineup wins by refusing to let the other side reset. Chicago finished with 12 hits, six walks and two hit batters, forcing Royals pitching through 180 pitches over 48 plate appearances. That is not just a productive night; it is a tiring one for the opponent. Antonacci set the tone by getting on and scoring three times, Teel turned traffic into damage, and Vargas repeatedly hit in the middle of the action.

There is still one small caveat for the White Sox, even in a nine-run showing. They also struck out 12 times. That did not hurt them because the on-base work was so steady, but it is the one line in an otherwise polished offensive performance that suggests innings were left unfinished. On a night when they reached this often, Chicago could afford the swing-and-miss. That will not always be true.

For Kansas City, the path to improvement is less mysterious than uncomfortable. The Royals issued six walks, hit two batters and committed two errors, and one run came home directly on a pickoff error by Dobnak. That is too much free help against any club, and Chicago was sharp enough to cash it in immediately. The brighter note was that not every inning looked the same. Anthony Gose threw 1.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts, and Spencer Bivens added two scoreless innings with four strikeouts. There was useful relief work after the damage.

The Royals also need more offense around their isolated extra-base hits. Perez homered and walked, John Rave had two hits, Kyle Isbel had two more, and the club totaled three doubles. Even so, Kansas City drew only one walk and struck out 10 times. That is why Perez's homer stood alone rather than becoming the start of a rally. When a team collects seven hits and only one run, the missing piece is usually not one heroic swing. It is finding a way to stack plate appearances together, something Chicago did from the opening inning and Kansas City never matched.
