Alec Burleson’s sixth-inning double gave the Cardinals all they needed in a 3-1 win over the White Sox

For five innings at Busch Stadium, this looked like the kind of game one clean rally might decide. In the sixth, Alec Burleson supplied it, driving a double to right that scored three and flipped a 1-0 White Sox lead into a 3-1 Cardinals victory.

Chicago White SoxSt. Louis Cardinals

A game of matching stat lines until the sixth

This was a strangely symmetrical box score for a game that still turned on one team’s ability to cash a single opening. The White Sox and Cardinals each finished with four hits. Both lineups struck out nine times. Both clubs hit .138. For most of the afternoon, the numbers pointed toward a 1-0 grinder and not much else.

Chicago had the only scoring play through the first five innings, getting on the board in the second when Chase Meidroth lifted a sacrifice fly to center that brought home Andrew Benintendi. That was a modest reward for a lineup that would go on to draw five walks and force St. Louis pitchers to throw 145 pitches. The White Sox kept creating chances, but the game never tilted because they could not build a second scoring inning behind that first run.

Then the sixth changed everything. St. Louis put three men aboard, and Burleson made the only swing of the game that really broke it open, doubling to right to score Nathan Church, Ivan Herrera and Masyn Winn. It was the Cardinals’ biggest offensive moment by a wide margin, and in a game where almost nothing came easy, one extra-base hit with traffic on the bases was enough to rewrite the afternoon.

There was another twist inside that inning: all three Cardinals runs were unearned. That made the White Sox’ lone error feel even heavier. David Sandlin’s pitching line told the story of how narrow the margin was. He worked 5 2/3 innings, allowed only two hits, walked nobody and struck out five, yet still wore three runs because the inning did not stay clean behind him. That is a frustrating stat line, but also an instructive one. Chicago’s pitching was good enough to win.

Chicago kept finding traffic and leaving it there

If the White Sox come away irritated, it will not be because they lacked opportunity. They sent 35 men to the plate, drew five walks and mixed in both a double and a triple. They also stranded 16 runners, which is the number that hangs over the whole game. Getting men on base is the first job; turning those baserunners into pressure that actually changes the score is the harder one, and Chicago never solved that second problem.

Benintendi scored the White Sox’ only run and added one of their four hits. Sam Antonacci, Miguel Vargas and Tristan Peters supplied the others, while Kyle Teel reached twice by walk. That is a decent collection of small contributions, but it stayed scattered. No home run arrived to erase the missed chances, and the lineup’s nine strikeouts and one ground-into-double-play kept breaking up innings before they could turn messy for St. Louis.

The Cardinals, meanwhile, got just enough from their staff after Michael McGreevy handled the first six innings. McGreevy gave up three hits, one run and three walks while striking out six, which gave St. Louis time to wait for the one rally it eventually found. Gordon Graceffo followed with two scoreless innings and three strikeouts, a particularly important bridge because it kept Chicago from immediately answering after the sixth.

George Soriano’s save was not spotless — he allowed a hit and two walks in his inning — but it still finished the job. That mattered because the White Sox had spent the entire day threatening in fragments. Even in the last frame, they could not turn traffic into damage. St. Louis did not dominate this game; it closed it better.

Our take: the result was small-ball cruel, but the lessons are plain

Our take: the Cardinals do not need to apologize for winning a low-offense game, especially one in which they played clean defense and seized the biggest opening. St. Louis made no errors, and that neatness contrasted sharply with a White Sox club that saw one defensive mistake swell into three unearned runs. In a 3-1 game with only eight total hits, that difference is not cosmetic. It is the shape of the result.

Still, there is a warning inside the win for St. Louis. The Cardinals also managed only four hits, drew no walks and struck out nine times. Burleson’s three RBIs covered for a very thin offensive day. If there is one area to sharpen, it is creating more consistent traffic ahead of the middle of the order. Depending on one rally and one extra-base hit can work for a day; it is a hard formula to trust every time out.

Our take on Chicago is simpler: the White Sox were better than the final score feels, but not efficient enough to complain too loudly. Their pitchers issued zero walks across eight innings and allowed only four hits. Offensively, though, five walks, 145 pitches seen and 16 runners left on base say the same thing over and over. More contact in those run-scoring spots would change games like this much faster than any dramatic overhaul.

That is why this one will read as a missed chance for the White Sox and a practical, well-timed win for the Cardinals. The teams matched each other in hits and strikeouts, and neither lineup spent the day roaring. Burleson’s double simply landed at the moment the game finally offered a crack. In a matchup this tight, that was enough to decide everything.
