Elly De La Cruz and three Cincinnati homers leave Braves chasing a game they never caught

One swing set the terms, and Atlanta never changed them

A game like this can feel larger than four runs when the first clean punch changes the whole tone. De La Cruz did that in the third inning, sending a 368-foot homer to right for a 1-0 lead. Atlanta still had six innings left to answer, but the Braves were immediately pushed into the least comfortable version of baseball: chasing from behind without any extra-base thump to erase the gap quickly.

That mattered because JR Ritchie actually gave Atlanta a workable start. His line — 5.0 innings, four hits, one run, three walks and eight strikeouts — should usually keep a club in the conversation. He missed bats, limited the damage to a single De La Cruz swing, and handed the later innings to the rest of the staff with the score still tight. On a different night, that outing could have been a platform.

Instead, Cincinnati found the second wave that Atlanta never produced. Dane Myers opened more space with a 410-foot homer to center in the sixth. In the seventh, Matt McLain scored on De La Cruz’s single to left, turning a close game into a two-possession one by baseball standards. Eugenio Suárez then finished the scoring with a 415-foot drive to center in the eighth. Those were not decorative runs. They were the innings that removed any illusion that Atlanta could survive on scattered traffic alone.

Cincinnati’s offense had waste, but it also had force

Atlanta’s relievers, or at least the portion of the staff that followed Ritchie, could not hold the line. Owen Murphy’s three innings brought six hits and three runs, including the Myers and Suárez home runs, and that was the decisive swing in the game. Didier Fuentes recorded the final two outs of the ninth without allowing a run, but by then the shape of the night had already been decided. Cincinnati had turned a manageable 1-0 game into a result Atlanta could not plausibly reverse with the kind of contact it was making.

Our take: the Braves created too little from too much traffic

The most revealing Atlanta number may not be the zero on the scoreboard. It may be the 14 runners left on base beside it. The Braves were not no-hit, and they were not buried by strikeouts; they had six hits, drew two walks and struck out only four times. But none of their six hits went for extra bases, they finished with only six total bases, and two ground-into-double-play moments cut directly into their best chances. That is a hard combination to survive against any competent pitching performance.

Brandon Williamson set the table for Cincinnati by giving Atlanta six scoreless innings on only 68 pitches, allowing three hits with no walks. That efficiency forced the Braves to do more than merely put men aboard; they needed to string together contact in a hurry, and they did not. Brock Burke and Tejay Antone each added a scoreless inning in the available box details, which kept the game frozen long enough for Cincinnati’s bats to add on. The supplied pitching lines do not account for the Reds’ final inning on the mound, but the broader point is still plain enough: Atlanta never found a way to turn baserunners into pressure.

Our take: Atlanta’s improvement starts with changing the quality of its offensive output, not just the quantity of baserunners.
