Pasquantino’s second homer in eighth lifts Royals past Guardians 3-2

Pasquantino answered every tie except the first

Kansas City got on the board in the first inning when Salvador Perez singled to left to bring home Maikel Garcia for a 1-0 lead. It was a simple opening strike, but it mattered in a game where neither side built any real cushion and every equalizer was met by another quick response.

Cleveland’s first answer came from Daniel Schneemann in the third. His 380-foot solo shot to right erased the early deficit and levelled the game at 1-1, continuing a theme that would define the afternoon: the Guardians could get even, but they could not quite move ahead.

Pasquantino restored the Royals’ lead with a 434-foot home run to centre in the fifth, only for Jo Adell to match him an inning later with a 440-foot drive to left-centre. The score sat at 2-2 until the eighth, when Pasquantino struck again, this time sending a 378-foot homer to right for the game’s decisive run. In a one-run finish, that second swing stood above everything else.

Lynch gave Kansas City a base, the bullpen kept it

Daniel Lynch IV did not have a dominant line, but he gave the Royals a workable start. The left-hander went 5.1 innings, allowed seven hits and both Cleveland runs, walked nobody and threw 53 strikes in 76 pitches. The damage against him was concentrated in the two solo home runs, which meant the Guardians were never able to stack a bigger inning on top of the traffic they created.

From there, Kansas City’s relief group handled the narrow margin well enough to finish it. Nolan Hoffman, Connor Thomas, Nate Pearson and Lucas Erceg combined for 3.1 scoreless innings. They allowed two hits and one walk while striking out three, and that steadiness mattered because Cleveland kept forcing at-bats deep enough to run the Royals’ staff to 138 pitches overall.

The clean finish was not automatic. Kansas City committed two errors, and Cleveland still finished with nine hits and 13 runners left on base. Even so, the Royals’ pitchers limited the Guardians to the same two runs they had after the sixth and closed out the game without surrendering the tying score.

Cleveland had enough contact, not enough separation

The Guardians got a respectable day from their own staff. Parker Messick covered the first three innings and gave up one run on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Austin Peterson followed with five innings of relief, struck out five and limited Kansas City to three hits, but two of those three left the yard. In a 3-2 game, that was the difference.

At the plate, Cleveland had useful individual performances without the one big sequence that changes a close game. Adell went 2-for-3 with a walk and a home run. Schneemann also finished 2-for-4 with a homer, and David Fry added two hits. Yet the Guardians did not record a double, managed only one walk, and turned nine hits into just two runs. Seven singles plus two solo home runs can keep a club competitive; they rarely guarantee control.

Our take: the hit totals matched, but the Royals did more with their best swings

This was not a game decided by volume. The teams had the same number of hits, and neither side was especially efficient with men on base. Kansas City stranded 16 runners of its own, so there was no offensive masterpiece here. The difference was that the Royals got three extra-base hits, including Pasquantino’s two home runs, while Cleveland’s offence never moved beyond solo damage. That is the clearest explanation for why identical hit totals still produced different outcomes.

For Cleveland, the reasonable takeaway is not that the offence disappeared, but that it needs better sequencing. Nine hits, one walk and two home runs should usually create more than two runs, and 13 runners left on base underline that missed opportunity. For Kansas City, the win came with its own warning label: two errors and 16 stranded runners kept the door open all day. The Royals found the winning swing anyway, and on Sunday that was enough.
