Twins’ four-run third withstands Cleveland’s rally in 4-3 win at Target Field

The Minnesota Twins did not build much margin against Cleveland on Saturday, but they built enough. A four-run third inning held up as the difference in a 4-3 victory over the Guardians, who spent the rest of the game trying to cash in on chances they kept creating and kept wasting.

One inning, and just enough of it

Cleveland struck first in the second when Travis Bazzana lined a single to center to bring home Jo Adell. It was a useful bit of offense in a game that never offered much easy hitting, but it also came with a small warning attached: Angel Martínez was thrown out at third on the same play. In a one-run game, an extra out on the bases has a way of lingering.

Minnesota’s answer came all at once in the third. Emmanuel Rodriguez opened the scoring for the home side with a 420-foot homer to center, then the inning kept rolling. Kody Clemens singled home Luke Keaschall, Royce Lewis followed with a run-scoring single that plated Brooks Lee, and Victor Caratini added the fourth run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. It was not one kind of offense so much as every useful kind in a short burst: one big swing, two RBI singles and a free run forced home.

That inning stood out even more because Cleveland’s staff was otherwise excellent. Daniel Espino covered two scoreless innings to begin the day. Joey Cantillo followed with four scoreless innings and eight strikeouts, and Craig Yoho added 1 1/3 scoreless innings. The damage sat almost entirely inside Franco Aleman’s two-thirds of an inning, when he allowed five hits, four earned runs and the Rodriguez homer. Baseball can be rude that way: one reliever’s rough stretch can outweigh a stack of sharp work around him.

The Guardians kept knocking, but the door never opened again

Cleveland did not disappear after the third. The Guardians pushed back in the fifth, first on Brayan Rocchio’s groundout that scored David Fry, then on Steven Kwan’s single to center that brought home Austin Hedges. At 4-3, the game had narrowed to a single swing, and Cleveland still had four innings left to find it.

Minnesota’s bullpen made sure that swing never arrived. Connor Prielipp worked 5 1/3 innings and gave up all three Cleveland runs, but once he exited, the game changed shape. Andrew Morris handled an inning, Kody Funderburk recorded two outs and struck out three, Jeff Hoffman punched out three more in his inning, and A.J. Minter finished the ninth. Together, that group covered 3 2/3 hitless innings with eight strikeouts. In a game decided by one run, that is not cleanup work; that is the result.

The frustrating part for Cleveland is that the opportunities were there. The Guardians managed only five hits, but they also drew two walks, had one batter hit by a pitch and still left 12 runners on base. That total explains the afternoon better than any one batting average can. They were not shut out of chances. They just could not turn enough of them into damage once the game tilted back toward Minnesota.

Our take: a clear lesson for both dugouts

For the Twins, this win is encouraging without being especially flattering. The decisive inning was real and well earned, especially from Rodriguez, Lee, Clemens and Lewis, but Minnesota also struck out 13 times and left 11 men on base. All four runs arrived in the third, and nothing else followed. That suggests an offense capable of punishing a mistake-filled inning, but still looking for a steadier way to pressure a staff across nine. When a lineup collects seven hits, draws two walks and gets hit three times, it can reasonably want more than one scoring inning out of the bargain.

For Cleveland, the outline is even sharper. The Guardians got strong work from most of their pitchers and nearly erased the deficit anyway. What beat them was the combination of one damaging pitching pocket and a lineup that went 5-for-32 overall. The recommendation is not mysterious: protect the middle innings better than they did in the third, and cash in more often when traffic builds. Those are not abstract fixes; they are written directly into the box of this game, where a four-run inning and 12 stranded runners sat side by side.

The broader reaction is simple enough. Minnesota deserved the result because it found the game’s best inning and then backed it with a bullpen that gave Cleveland nothing late. The Guardians, though, will leave Target Field thinking less about being outclassed than about letting a very reachable game slip past them. On Saturday, that was the difference between a narrow loss and a narrow win.
