Predators answer Miro Heiskanen’s early strike and beat Stars 2-1 on special teams

Nashville gave up the first goal 47 seconds in, then turned the game with two first-period power-play markers and a steady finish in a 2-1 win over Dallas on Saturday at Bridgestone Arena.

A quick Dallas lead, then Nashville’s reply

Dallas could not have asked for a cleaner start. Heiskanen opened the scoring at 0:47 of the first period with a wrist shot, with Mikko Rantanen and Wyatt Johnston collecting the assists. In a game that would stay tight on the shot clock all night, that kind of early edge should have mattered more than it did.

Nashville erased it quickly. Stamkos tied the game at 4:46 with a snap shot set up by Ryan O’Reilly and Roman Josi, and the Predators took the lead for good at 15:49 when Nils Hoglander scored on a deflection off feeds from Jack Ahcan and Alexander Kerfoot. All three goals arrived in the opening period, which left the rest of the night to be decided by execution rather than any late surge.

That is what makes this result feel especially clean for Nashville and especially frustrating for Dallas. The Stars struck first, but the Predators owned the next two scoring plays and then protected the one-goal margin the rest of the way. With Nashville finishing with 20 shots and Dallas with 18, there was never much room for either side to waste a chance.

Where the game tilted: special teams and a thin margin

The difference on the scoreboard sat plainly in the special-teams numbers. Nashville went 2-for-3 on the power play. Dallas went 0-for-1. In a 2-1 game, that is not a side note; it is the result.

Dallas did enough in a few peripheral areas to suggest this was still there to be won. The Stars led 24-16 in hits, held a slight edge in faceoffs at 51.3 per cent, and blocked nine shots to Nashville’s seven. Lian Bichsel delivered five hits, Roope Hintz added four, and Radek Faksa had three. That gave Dallas some of the hardness a coach would want to see in a one-goal game.

But the Stars could not turn that work into enough offence. They managed only 18 shots and did not capitalize on their lone power play. Nashville, by contrast, got just enough from its top names: Stamkos scored and put four shots on goal, Hoglander found the winner, O’Reilly and Josi each added an assist, and Juuse Saros stopped 17 of 18 shots. Casey DeSmith was solid at the other end with 18 saves on 20 shots, yet the two Nashville breakthroughs had already done the damage.

Our take: a useful Nashville formula, and a warning for Dallas

For Nashville, the encouraging part of this win is not that it overwhelmed Dallas. It did not. The Predators won because their power play was decisive and their goaltending was steady once they moved in front. That is a practical formula in low-scoring games, and on this night it was enough.

The caution for Nashville is just as clear. Both goals came with the man advantage, and the team produced only 20 shots overall. When a game is decided by a single goal, that leaves very little cushion. A bit more five-on-five offence would make results like this less dependent on perfect timing on special teams.

For Dallas, the lesson is harder because the opening was so promising. Heiskanen’s goal gave the Stars the sort of start teams spend whole nights chasing, but they did not build on it. The Stars finished with one goal, one unsuccessful power play and only 18 shots. They were engaged physically and competitive in the faceoff circle, yet the categories that most often decide a 2-1 game — power-play finish and total scoring output — belonged to Nashville.

That is why this one reads as a disciplined Predators win rather than a dramatic escape. Nashville answered the first punch, converted the chances that mattered most, and carried a first-period lead all the way home. Dallas kept it close, but close was not enough once the special-teams gap was on the board.
