Panthers outlast Lions 32-26 behind Bryce Young, Tetairoa McMillan and Chuba Hubbard

Carolina survived a high-yardage Detroit passing day by finishing more drives and leaning on a balanced offensive trio, beating the Lions 32-26 on Sunday at Bank of America Stadium.

A game that swung on finishes, not fireworks

Detroit did enough through the air to make this uncomfortable all afternoon. Jared Goff completed 32 of 52 passes for 412 yards, and the Lions produced 452 total yards without a turnover. That usually gives a team a strong platform. Carolina still found a way because the Panthers were cleaner where the game tightened: in the red zone, on fourth down and on the ground.

Carolina matched Detroit’s yardage almost snap for snap with 445 total yards, but the shape of those yards mattered. The Panthers ran for 127 yards, held the ball for 33:15 and converted all four of their red-zone trips into points, including three touchdowns. Detroit finished 2-for-4 in the red zone, went 1-for-3 on fourth down and managed only 46 rushing yards on 15 attempts. In a six-point game, those are not side notes. They are the margin.

The other small detail that could have become a large one was Ryan Fitzgerald’s extra-point line. He made both field-goal attempts but missed two PATs, leaving Carolina at 13 and then 22 instead of building cleaner separation. Detroit stayed attached because Jake Bates answered with a perfect 4-for-4 day on field goals, including makes from 54, 43, 41 and 26 yards.

Dead even by halftime, then Carolina struck first again

The first half set the tone for the whole night: Detroit would answer, but Carolina would keep landing the bigger blow. Bates opened the scoring with a 54-yard field goal at 12:05 of the first quarter before Chuba Hubbard put the Panthers ahead 7-3 on a 15-yard touchdown run with 1:50 left in the period.

Bates cut the deficit to 7-6 early in the second quarter, but Bryce Young and Tetairoa McMillan connected for the first of their two touchdowns at 8:08, a 32-yard strike that pushed Carolina to 13-6 after the failed PAT. Detroit answered again when Jahmyr Gibbs scored from 1 yard out with 2:14 left in the half, tying the game at 13-13.

Even then, the half still had two more turns. Fitzgerald drilled a 47-yard field goal with 28 seconds remaining to restore Carolina’s lead, and Bates closed the half with a 41-yarder at the gun. At 16-16, the scoreboard reflected the exchange of punches, but Carolina had already shown the formula it would ride later: Hubbard gave the Panthers a steady rushing presence, and McMillan was becoming the hardest player on the field to contain.

McMillan and Hubbard shaped the winning stretch

Carolina took control in the third quarter with the two players who defined its offense. Young found McMillan again at 9:33, this time from 10 yards, for a 22-16 lead. After Bates answered with his fourth field goal to bring Detroit within three, Hubbard finished another Panthers drive from 2 yards out at 2:47. That sequence turned a one-score game into a 29-19 Carolina edge and forced Detroit to keep chasing touchdowns instead of trading kicks.

McMillan’s stat line was the game’s clearest mismatch: 14 catches for 192 yards and two touchdowns on 16 targets. Young spread the ball elsewhere as well, but McMillan was the engine of the passing game. Hubbard gave that attack balance with 20 carries for 122 yards and two rushing touchdowns, including a long run of 32 yards. Young’s final line — 29 of 41 for 329 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions — showed how efficiently Carolina built around both threats.

Detroit’s receiving numbers were strong enough to win on another day. Jameson Williams topped 100 yards, Isaac TeSlaa added 95, Sam LaPorta caught eight passes for 84 yards and a late touchdown, and Amon-Ra St. Brown had eight catches for 75 yards. But the Lions had to work almost entirely through the pass. Gibbs was limited to 46 rushing yards, and the offense settled for field goals four times before LaPorta’s 8-yard touchdown with 3:38 left cut the deficit to 32-26.

Our take

This was not a game in which Carolina overwhelmed Detroit. The total-yardage line says otherwise, and Goff’s 412 passing yards kept pressure on the Panthers to the end. What Carolina did better was build a more complete offensive profile. The Panthers could hit through Young and McMillan, but they also had Hubbard to finish drives and keep the offence from becoming one-dimensional.

For Detroit, the passing volume and talent were obvious, yet the shape of the loss points to two practical areas for improvement. The Lions would benefit from more consistent rushing support after averaging 3.1 yards per carry, and they needed a better return on their scoring chances after going 2-for-4 in the red zone. When a team posts 452 yards, commits no turnovers and still loses, the missing production is usually found in those details. On this day, Carolina handled them better and earned the six-point result.
