Murakami’s first-inning three-run shot gives White Sox enough in 3-1 win over Tigers

The inning that decided the night

Chicago did not need much offense after the opening frame because the opening frame was everything. Chase Meidroth reached and scored, Randal Grichuk came home too, and Murakami turned both baserunners into the game’s decisive margin with a drive to center. It was the only White Sox scoring play of the night, but it changed the arithmetic immediately: Detroit was no longer trying to win a tidy pitchers’ game, it was trying to erase a three-run hole.

That matters because the Tigers’ pitching was good for most of the evening outside of that burst. Framber Valdez finished with eight strikeouts over five innings, and after the first inning he did not allow another run. Jacob Waguespack added a clean inning with two strikeouts, and Ty Madden covered the last two innings without allowing a run. On another night, that line from Detroit’s staff would be the foundation of a win. Here, it read more like damage control after one costly sequence.

The White Sox were hardly relentless after that. They finished with only five hits and struck out 11 times, a reminder that this was not an all-night avalanche. But Murakami’s line carried real weight: two hits, three RBIs and the homer that settled the scoreboard into its final shape. Brenton Doyle added two hits of his own, and Meidroth’s run at the top of the order helped start the only inning Chicago truly needed. It was sparse production, but it was concentrated where it counted.

Detroit had chances, but not the hit

Detroit’s answer came in the third inning, when Max Clark scored on Gleyber Torres’ fielder’s choice to third. Kevin McGonigle moved to second on the play, while John Peck was retired at third, and the Tigers had at least cut the game to 3-1. That run kept the pressure on Chicago’s pitching and suggested the comeback path was there, even if it never widened into a full opening.

The frustrating part for Detroit is that the raw opportunity was present. The Tigers collected eight hits, drew five walks and made Chicago pitchers work through 160 pitches over 38 plate appearances. McGonigle had two hits, and six other Tigers recorded one apiece. But the attack never produced the one swing or even the one clean multi-hit inning that could reset the night. Detroit had only one extra-base hit, a double, and no home runs. When a team creates that much traffic and gets one run, the missing piece is usually not access to the bases; it is the hit that changes several at once.

Chicago’s pitchers deserve their share of the explanation. Erick Fedde worked 4 2/3 innings, allowed one run and struck out six before turning the game over. From there, Bryan Hudson, Jordan Hicks and Grant Taylor covered the final 4 1/3 innings without allowing a run. That trio did permit four hits and three walks, so this was not a lockdown in the sense of no traffic, but it was a lockdown in the sense that every threat stopped short. The White Sox were credited with a save, and the bullpen earned it the hard way.

Our take: one team owned the moment, the other missed it

Our take: this is the kind of 3-1 game that can annoy the losing side for good reason. Detroit limited Chicago to five hits, watched its own pitchers strike out 11 White Sox, and still could not turn a game full of manageable moments into a comeback. The White Sox, by contrast, did not build a broad offensive case for themselves; they built one forceful argument in the first inning and spent the rest of the evening defending it. Baseball often reduces itself that way. The better-looking total line does not matter much when the loudest swing belongs to the other dugout.

If Detroit is searching for a cleaner formula next time, the evidence here points to impact, not access. Eight hits and five walks should yield more than one run, especially when several different hitters are involved, but one double and no homers left too much of the rally-making to chain reactions. For Chicago, the improvement case runs in the opposite direction: the White Sox cannot expect every game to be solved by one early homer, not after going scoreless for the final eight innings and striking out 11 times. Still, for one night, an early blast, clean fielding and just enough late pitching were enough to make that first inning stand up all the way to the last out.
