Oilers’ 8-2 cushion survives Canucks’ furious push in 9-7 Rogers Arena shootout

The Edmonton Oilers scored nine times, built an 8-2 lead before the second period was 10 minutes old and still had to sweat out a 9-7 win over the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena.

Edmonton’s stars turned the opening half into a sprint

The game tilted hard and early. Vasily Podkolzin opened the scoring at 9:26 of the first period, Owen Michaels doubled the lead at 14:26, and the official scoring log listed another Edmonton goal just 16 seconds later without a credited scorer. Ryan Shea then struck at 19:32, giving the Oilers a four-goal first period before Vancouver could settle the night.

Edmonton kept pressing right out of the intermission. Leon Draisaitl scored 27 seconds into the second for 5-0, a snapshot of how quickly the Canucks were being punished. Even when Vancouver answered through Paul Cotter at 4:31, the Oilers restored separation almost immediately. Trent Frederic scored 33 seconds later, Connor McDavid added one at 7:49, and Kasperi Kapanen made it 8-2 at 8:23.

That stretch explained the result as much as anything that came later. McDavid finished with a goal and four assists, Draisaitl had two goals and an assist, and Edmonton’s top-end skill kept turning possession into damage. Evan Bouchard contributed a goal and two assists, while Podkolzin added a goal and an assist of his own. For long portions of the first half, every Vancouver mistake seemed to end up behind the goaltender.

The Canucks finally found traction and made it interesting

To Vancouver’s credit, the game did not die at 8-2. Brock Boeser had already answered once in the second period, and Arshdeep Bains scored with one second left in the frame to make it 8-3. That late goal mattered because it gave the Canucks a path back into the third instead of a purely cosmetic final 20 minutes.

Marco Rossi then drove the comeback. He scored at 1:53 of the third and again at 4:43, the second on a deflection, and suddenly the score was 8-5. Elias Pettersson cut it to 8-6 at 7:37 with a slap shot, capping a run of four straight Vancouver goals spanning the second intermission. In a game that had looked finished, Edmonton was suddenly being asked to close.

Draisaitl supplied the stabilizer at 9:26 of the third, restoring a three-goal cushion at 9-6 with help from McDavid and Podkolzin. Jamie Oleksiak answered late at 18:31, and the final score still looked startlingly close for a night in which Vancouver had once trailed by six. Rossi finished with two goals and an assist, Pettersson had a goal and two helpers, and Bains, Boeser, Hronek and Oleksiak all had multi-point nights in defeat.

Our take: the offence dazzled, but neither side should love the details

This was one of those NHL scorelines that flatters attacking talent and exposes almost everything else. Edmonton earned the win with superior finish, 31 shots, two power-play goals and two more while shorthanded, but allowing seven goals on 22 shots is a warning sign inside a victory. Devon Levi stopped 15 of 22 for a .682 save percentage, so the Oilers’ margin for error depended almost entirely on their stars outrunning the damage at the other end.

The Canucks can point to some useful counterweights. They won 59.6 per cent of the faceoffs, outhit Edmonton 28-20 and generated enough finish to score seven times on 22 shots. But the deeper problem was how much they gave away before the comeback even had a chance to matter. Vancouver was charged with 28 giveaways, took five penalties for 10 minutes and used two goaltenders, with Kevin Lankinen allowing eight goals on 20 shots before Leevi Merilainen settled things with 10 saves on 11 shots.

If there is a practical lesson for both benches, it is not complicated. Edmonton does not need nine goals to win when it gets cleaner goaltending and tighter defensive management, and Vancouver cannot expect a late push to erase a first half that loose. The entertainment value was obvious. The repeatable formula, for either club, was much harder to defend.
