Matthew Tkachuk’s third-period winner lifts Panthers past Kings 2-1 in Los Angeles

Matthew Tkachuk broke a 1-1 tie at 11:20 of the third period and Jacob Markstrom stopped 19 of 20 shots as the Florida Panthers edged the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 at Crypto.com Arena.

A late first-period lead did not last

Los Angeles carried the only goal of the opening period into the intermission after Alex Laferriere scored on a wrist shot at 19:00. Erik Haula picked up the assist, and the Kings had the small but useful edge that often shapes low-scoring games.

Florida erased it quickly in the second. Seth Jones tied the game 3:49 into the period on a wrist shot set up by Lars Eller, and the night settled into a one-shot swing from there. The deadlock held until 11:20 of the third, when Matthew Tkachuk finished the Panthers’ second goal off Sam Bennett’s assist for the 2-1 lead that stood as the winner.

That sequence was enough because the Panthers controlled the overall shot count, 28-20, and got the steadier finish in net. Markstrom turned aside 19 shots for a .950 save percentage, while Darcy Kuemper kept Los Angeles close with 26 saves and a .929 mark. Jones played a game-high 25:33 among Florida skaters and delivered the equalizer, while Tkachuk added the decisive goal and five hits in 21:25 of ice time. Laferriere, for his part, supplied the Kings’ only finish and added three shots and three hits.

Special teams created chances, not separation

If there was one theme running underneath the scoring, it was how completely both penalty-kill units held the line. Florida went 0-for-6 on the power play. Los Angeles went 0-for-5. With 11 total opportunities between the clubs and no power-play goal to show for any of them, this game stayed in the hands of five-on-five execution and goaltending.

The Panthers brought a more abrasive statistical profile. They finished with 33 hits to the Kings’ 13 and blocked 15 shots. Los Angeles answered with 17 blocks of its own and a 54.2 per cent edge in the faceoff circle, but the Kings also gave the puck away 27 times compared with 15 by Florida. In a one-goal result, that gap is hard to ignore.

There were useful supporting performances on both sides even without a long scoring sheet. Haula not only assisted on Laferriere’s opener, he also went 13-for-23 on draws. Quinton Byfield added 10 faceoff wins for Los Angeles, and Mikey Anderson blocked five shots. Florida’s scoring support was lean but efficient: Eller set up Jones, Bennett fed Tkachuk, and the Panthers did not need much more once they had the lead.

Our take: Florida found just enough, and Los Angeles left itself little margin

This was not a flashy Panthers performance, but it was a mature one. They generated eight more shots than the Kings, survived a game in which their own power play came up empty, and relied on Markstrom to secure the final minutes. When a team wins 2-1 without a special-teams breakthrough, the cleanest explanation is often the correct one: it got the timely goal and enough saves behind it.

Florida still has obvious areas to tidy up. Six power plays without a goal is too much empty opportunity to dismiss, and 15 giveaways plus 15 penalty minutes gave Los Angeles extra paths back into the game. The Panthers can feel good about leaving with the result, but the margin stayed narrow because some of the sloppier parts of their night never really disappeared.

For the Kings, the frustration is easy to identify in the numbers. They scored late in the first, won more faceoffs, and received strong work from Kuemper, yet they managed only 20 shots and no power-play finish across five chances. The larger warning sign is the 27 giveaways. In a game this tight, that kind of puck management leaves almost no room for a missed chance, and once Tkachuk put Florida ahead in the third, Los Angeles had too little offence left to recover.
