A three-point swing before halftime
For much of the afternoon, this was a one-score game decided by a handful of precise moments. Green Bay created the first separation in the second quarter, when Love found Matthew Golden for a 2-yard touchdown at 12:54 to open the scoring.
Tampa Bay answered with 5:13 left in the half on Sean Tucker’s 2-yard rushing touchdown, tying the game at 7-7. The response mattered because the Buccaneers were finding enough on the ground to stay even, with Jalon Daniels leading the team in rushing at 55 yards and Tucker adding the short score.
Then came the kick that changed the halftime picture. Smack hit from 58 yards as the second quarter expired, sending Green Bay to the break ahead 10-7. In a game that finished with a three-point margin, that strike was not a footnote; it was one of the day’s defining plays.
Love stayed efficient and Green Bay finished its best chances
The Packers never produced a huge statistical advantage, but Love made their passing game efficient and mistake-free. He completed 22 of 29 passes for 198 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions, and Green Bay did not allow a sack. In a tight result, that kind of clean quarterback line carries real weight.
His second touchdown came at 10:32 of the third quarter, a 2-yard pass to Tucker Kraft that pushed the Packers in front 17-7. Kraft was also Green Bay’s busiest target, catching six passes for 42 yards and a score. Golden added the opening touchdown, while Christian Watson supplied the biggest receiving total with 47 yards on three catches.
Green Bay’s offence was not perfect. The Packers went just 2-for-9 on third down, lost a fumble and took eight penalties for 58 yards. But they compensated elsewhere. They converted all three fourth-down attempts, reached the end zone on two of three red-zone trips and got enough support from the run game, where Kaleb Johnson led the club with 41 yards and Chris Brooks added 30 on only four carries.
Tampa Bay made its push immediately in the fourth quarter. Daniels connected with Kenny Gainwell for a 10-yard touchdown pass just 11 seconds into the period, trimming the deficit to 17-14. That kept the pressure on Green Bay after a day in which Tampa Bay actually ran for more yards than the Packers, 126-97, and finished with one more first down, 16-15.
Our take: the turnovers outweighed Tampa Bay’s rushing edge
The most convincing explanation for this result is not found in the total yardage alone. The Buccaneers were close enough in first downs, stronger on the ground and perfect in the red zone at 2-for-2. Yet Daniels threw two interceptions, and that was the cleanest dividing line between the teams.
Edgerrin Cooper and Evan Williams came away with Green Bay’s interceptions, while the Packers gave the ball away only once on a Kaleb Johnson fumble. In a game with only nine Green Bay drives and eight for Tampa Bay, extra possessions carried more value than usual. The Packers also squeezed more scoring out of their passing game, getting both touchdowns through Love while Tampa Bay managed only one through the air.
There is also a lesson here for both sides. For Green Bay, the win came without dominant volume; 295 total yards and a 2-for-9 third-down mark suggest there is still room to become steadier between the scoring plays. For Tampa Bay, the rushing output was encouraging, but the passing game remained too limited. Daniels threw for 119 yards before sack yardage, and the Buccaneers finished with 111 net passing yards overall. That left little margin for two interceptions.
In the end, the Packers did not need style points. They needed two sharp touchdown throws, one elite kick before halftime and a defence that took the ball away twice. In a 17-14 game, that formula was enough.
