Yordan Alvarez bookends Astros’ 7-0 win over Mariners as Houston’s power decides the night

Four scoring bursts told the whole story

Houston did not need a constant parade of runs to control this game. It needed timely authority, and it got it almost immediately. Yordan Alvarez opened the scoring with a first-inning single to right that brought home Jeremy Peña, a simple play on the scorecard but an early marker of the matchup that followed: the Astros would keep finding the swing that mattered most.

The decisive separation came in the third. Christian Walker drove a home run to left, 377 feet, and in one swing turned a 1-0 edge into a 4-0 advantage by scoring Jose Altuve and Yainer Diaz with him. That was the inning where the game stopped feeling merely tilted and started to look firmly Houston-shaped. Seattle was no longer dealing with one productive at-bat; it was dealing with a lineup that could cash in immediately.

After that, the Astros kept choosing precision over noise. Isaac Paredes added a solo homer to left in the sixth, 372 feet, and Alvarez closed the scoring with a two-run shot to right in the eighth, 386 feet, again bringing Peña around. Alvarez finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a walk, Walker drove in three, and Paredes reached twice and supplied another run on his own. When a lineup gets that kind of production from its middle, 12 hits become more than volume. They become separation.

Seattle created traffic, but never the threat to match it

The Mariners’ offensive line was not empty of opportunity; it was empty of damage. Seattle managed only four hits, and every one of them was a single. Julio Rodríguez had two of those hits, Dominic Canzone added one, and Cole Young added another while also drawing a walk. Seattle also worked five walks and had a batter hit by a pitch, which means there were chances to put stress on Houston’s pitchers. The problem was what came after.

That is the harsh part of a 7-0 game like this. Seattle’s on-base work was real, but it never turned into force. The Mariners finished with no extra-base hits, just four total bases and 16 runners left on base. A lineup can survive a low hit total on some nights if the contact comes with impact. On this night there was no such rescue. Even with Randy Arozarena drawing two walks and Cal Raleigh and J.P. Crawford each reaching once by walk, Houston never had to absorb the kind of swing that flips an inning.

The Astros’ pitching group deserves credit for that control of the bigger moment. Cristian Javier started the shutout effort, and Houston kept handing the game from one arm to the next without allowing Seattle any breakthrough. Miguel Ullola, Bennett Sousa, AJ Blubaugh and Logan VanWey all followed, and the combined line stayed clean: no runs, no extra-base hits allowed, eight strikeouts in all. Seattle did steal two bases, but without a gap hit or a home run behind them, those advances never changed the shape of the night.

Our take: Houston had the loudest contact, and that was the difference

There are games where the box score asks for a deep tactical reading, and there are games where the answer is more direct. This one belongs to the second category. Houston hit three home runs and Seattle hit none. Houston produced 22 total bases and Seattle produced four. That is not subtle, and it does not need to be dressed up as something else.

For the Mariners, the clearest area to improve is converting patience into pressure. Five walks and a hit batter should create a path to at least a crooked inning, but that path disappears when there are no extra-base hits at all. Seattle does not need more proof that it can put men on base; this game showed that. What it needed was one swing to move multiple runners or punish a mistake, and the record of the night shows none arrived.

For the Astros, the result was commanding, but there is still a reasonable nitpick inside it. Houston struck out eight times and grounded into a double play even while putting up seven runs. Against a club that does more with opponent mistakes, those empty outs could matter more. Still, that is a small complaint beside the larger truth. Alvarez framed the game with the first run and the last two, Walker supplied the knockout stretch in the third, and Houston’s staff never let Seattle build an answering inning. That is a convincing road formula, and on this night it was more than enough.
