Junior Caminero’s ninth-inning blast lifts Rays past Astros in a 3-1 game that defied the hit count

The neatest summary of Friday’s Astros-Rays game at Tropicana Field is also the strangest one: Houston collected nine hits, Tampa Bay managed four, and the Rays still walked away with a 3-1 win because the loudest swings belonged to them.

Nine hits, one run

Houston spent most of the night doing the harder part of offense — getting men aboard — and almost none of the finishing. The Astros put together nine hits and a walk, but their only run came in the fourth inning when Yainer Diaz grounded into a fielder’s choice that brought home Isaac Paredes. It was a useful lead, not a comfortable one, and the reason became clearer as the innings passed: Houston had traffic, but very little force behind it. The club finished with just one extra-base hit, no home runs and 12 runners left on base.

Tampa Bay’s answer was much simpler and much more decisive. Victor Mesa Jr. erased the deficit in the fifth with a 415-foot home run to right-center, turning a quiet offensive night into a level game with one swing. The tie held all the way into the ninth, which mattered because the Rays never needed a pile of hits to change the night. They only needed one more clean connection.

That came from Junior Caminero, and it ended everything at once. With Jonny DeLuca aboard, Caminero drove a 417-foot homer to left-center in the ninth for the game’s final margin. Two Rays home runs accounted for all three Tampa Bay runs. That is the sharp contrast running through this box score: Houston gathered more, but Tampa Bay got more out of less.

Rasmussen made the traffic manageable

The Rays were able to live with Houston’s steady stream of singles because Drew Rasmussen never let an inning get away from him. Over seven innings, Rasmussen allowed eight hits but just one run, walked nobody and struck out four on 92 pitches. It was not the kind of line that says overpowering; it was the kind that says controlled. The Astros kept showing up on the bases, and Rasmussen kept making sure they did not stay there long enough to matter.

That effort was helped by a crisp defensive night behind him. Tampa Bay turned four double plays and did not commit an error, a combination that can make eight hits feel much smaller than eight hits usually look. Tyler Wells followed with a scoreless eighth, and Bryan Baker handled the ninth inning on the mound before the Rays came up in the bottom half. Across the final two innings, Houston managed just one hit and one walk.

Houston, for its part, got more than enough pitching to win for most of the evening. Ethan Pecko covered 5.2 innings and allowed only one hit, but that hit was Mesa Jr.’s game-tying homer. Miguel Ullola and Bryan King combined for 2.1 scoreless innings around him, and for a while the Astros appeared set up for a narrow, low-scoring victory. Then Bryan Abreu’s brief ninth-inning outing flipped the whole picture: two hits, two runs, and Caminero’s deciding home run.

Our take: the lesson was in the leverage

Our take: this was an irritating loss for Houston because it was built from enough good work to suggest a win should have been there. The Astros were clean in the field, they got solid pitching for 8.0 innings, and Yainer Diaz produced two hits plus the club’s only RBI. But a lineup that leaves 12 runners on base and produces only one extra-base hit is asking for trouble in a one-run game. The most obvious area to tighten is not how often Houston reached base, but how little damage it did once it got there.

For Tampa Bay, the result is flattering and cautionary at the same time. The flattering part is obvious: four hits, two of them home runs, and a win against a team that kept pressuring the game. The caution is that the Rays hit .148 for the night and were still tied 1-1 entering the ninth despite two walks, a hit batter and two stolen bases. On another night, that can be too thin a margin. If there is one thing to carry forward, it is the value of the big swing; if there is one thing to improve, it is building a little more offense before the last inning demands heroics.

Still, the Rays earned the shape of this win. They kept Houston from stringing its hit total into a bigger score, got a sturdy start from Rasmussen, and let their power decide the evening. In a game that looked lopsided only if you stopped at the hit column, Tampa Bay understood the only count that mattered by the end.
