Ian Seymour’s 10 strikeouts and Richie Palacios’ two-run single lift Rays past Astros 3-2

Seymour made Houston work for everything

Ian Seymour’s line explains the shape of the night. In six innings, the Rays right-hander allowed four hits and two runs, walked one and struck out 10. Houston did get to him for Isaac Paredes’ solo homer in the first and Yainer Díaz’s run-scoring single in the sixth, but almost everything else came wrapped in resistance. The Astros finished with five hits, batted .156 as a team and struck out 14 times.

That strikeout total is the first thing that lingers from Tampa Bay’s side. Seymour started it, then Tyler Wells, Ty Johnson and Bryan Baker finished it, combining for eight more outs without allowing a run. Wells worked a clean inning with two strikeouts, Johnson handled two outs in the eighth, and Baker closed the final four outs for the save. For a one-run game, that is about as crisp a relief bridge as a club can ask for.

Houston did not pitch poorly enough to lose by much, and that is part of what makes the result feel tight rather than lopsided. Peter Lambert gave the Astros six innings, allowed six hits, did not issue a walk and was charged with all three Rays runs. He also got help from a defense that turned three double plays. But with only four strikeouts from Houston pitching all night, Tampa Bay put more balls in play and kept more innings alive.

From Paredes’ jolt to Palacios’ answer

For a while, the game looked like it might belong to the first swing that landed flush. Paredes opened the scoring by sending a 391-foot drive to left-center in the first inning, giving Houston a 1-0 lead before many of the game’s patterns had fully revealed themselves. It was one of only two Astros extra-base hits, and it stood out even more once the Rays’ pitching settled in.

Tampa Bay’s reply came all at once in the fifth. Victor Mesa Jr. and Chandler Simpson both came around on Richie Palacios’ single to center, flipping a one-run deficit into a 2-1 lead. That swing supplied the Rays’ biggest offensive moment, and it fit the broader texture of their night: not much thunder, but enough traffic. Tampa Bay finished with seven hits, four walks and only one extra-base hit, yet still found the timely contact Houston could not quite match often enough.

The Astros did answer in the sixth, and Yainer Díaz was at the center of nearly everything they created. His single to left scored Jose Altuve and tied the game at 2-2. Díaz went 3-for-4 and drove in one, meaning he personally accounted for three of Houston’s five hits. That mattered because the rest of the lineup never found sustained rhythm. When one hitter supplies that much of a five-hit night, every empty at-bat around him becomes heavier.

A sacrifice fly decided it, and the box score offers both teams a lesson

The winning run arrived without any need for a gap shot. In the seventh, Nick Madrigal lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Kenny Piper and push Simpson to second, restoring Tampa Bay’s lead at 3-2. It was the kind of small scoring play that often decides games when neither offense is rolling downhill. After that, the Rays’ bullpen made the single-run edge hold up.

Our take: this was a sharp example of how a close baseball game can still point clearly in one direction. Tampa Bay’s pitchers were the cleanest unit on the field. The Rays struck out only four times at the plate; the Astros struck out 14 times. That does not mean Tampa Bay solved everything offensively — the Rays also left 10 runners on base and managed just one extra-base hit — but it does mean they gave themselves more chances to cash a modest total into three runs.

For Houston, the improvement path is not mysterious, even if it is not simple. The Astros left 10 on base, and outside of Díaz’s 3-for-4 night and Paredes’ homer, the lineup produced very little hard result in the box score. More contact would change the shape of games like this quickly. For Tampa Bay, the takeaway is slightly different: the approach worked, but 11 baserunners from seven hits and four walks usually invites the question of whether more than three runs should have followed. On this night, though, Seymour and the bullpen made three enough.
