Spencer Shrader’s late 53-yarder rescues Colts after Texans briefly grab fourth-quarter lead

Shrader kept Indianapolis in front until the very end

Indianapolis spent most of the day doing enough to lead and too much to relax. The Colts finished with 300 total yards to Houston’s 206, held the ball for 35:13 and moved the chains 19 times, but three giveaways kept a modest edge from turning into control. That left Shrader, not the offence, as the player who ultimately settled the game.

The Colts opened with Shrader’s 39-yard field goal at 4:28 of the first quarter, then stretched the margin early in the second when Daniel Jones found Keenan Allen for a six-yard touchdown and a 10-0 lead with 11:08 left in the half. Houston answered through the air as well, C.J. Stroud hitting Foster Moreau from a yard out at 4:30, but Shrader restored some breathing room before halftime with a 58-yarder at 1:03 for a 13-7 score.

A scoreless third quarter kept the game tight, and Indianapolis still could not turn territory into separation. Shrader’s 37-yard field goal with 12:43 remaining pushed the Colts to 16-7, but even that felt more like a warning than a clincher. With the Colts 1-for-3 in the red zone, every missed chance gave Houston room to stay alive.

Houston found a late opening

The Texans did not produce much volume, but they avoided the errors that usually bury a road team. Houston turned the ball over zero times, took only two penalties for 14 yards and stayed within one score long enough to make the fourth quarter matter. Stroud finished 15-of-24 for 150 passing yards with one touchdown, no interceptions and three sacks, while Xavier Hutchinson led the receiving group with three catches for 51 yards.

Houston’s offence was hardly explosive. The Texans ran only 48 plays, averaged 4.3 yards per snap and managed 70 rushing yards on 21 attempts. David Montgomery was limited to 33 yards on 11 carries, and Woody Marks added 15 yards on five attempts before delivering the most important run of the afternoon.

First came Ka’imi Fairbairn’s 24-yard field goal with 7:33 left, cutting the Colts’ lead to 16-10. Then, with 1:48 remaining, Marks punched in a one-yard touchdown and Fairbairn’s extra point put Houston ahead 17-16. For a team that had trailed all day, it was an efficient late swing built on patience rather than big numbers.

The Texans also gave themselves that chance with pressure. Will Anderson Jr. led a four-sack day with 2.5 sacks, Sheldon Rankins added one, and Danielle Hunter had the other half-sack. Reed Blankenship intercepted Jones, and Houston recovered two lost fumbles by Jones as well. Against a cleaner opponent, that kind of defensive work can be enough to win.

Our take: the Colts escaped, but the box score shows why this stayed close

There was enough from Indianapolis to justify the result, just not enough to make it comfortable. Jones completed 24 of 36 passes for 235 yards and a touchdown, Josh Downs caught five balls for 77 yards, Allen added six catches for 63 and a score, and Tyler Warren supplied nine receptions for 55 yards. That is a respectable passing day, especially paired with a 7-for-15 mark on third down and perfect 2-for-2 work on fourth down. But one interception, two lost fumbles and repeated stalls near the goal line turned a productive afternoon into a one-kick escape.

The running game also never gave Indianapolis an easy way to close the door. Jonathan Taylor carried 23 times for 68 yards, and the Colts averaged just 2.9 yards per rush as a team. That does not mean the ground game failed outright, but it does explain why so many drives still depended on Jones completing underneath throws and why Shrader was asked to finish possessions with his right leg instead of seven points.

Shrader delivered all of it. He went 4-for-4 on field goals, hit from 39, 58, 37 and finally 53 yards, and accounted for 13 of Indianapolis’s 19 points. In a game defined by small margins, he was the cleanest part of the Colts’ performance.

Houston, meanwhile, can point to a defence that created enough havoc and an offence that protected the ball. The issue was scale. With only 206 total yards and nine drives, the Texans left themselves very little room for an off series or a stalled possession. Their late lead was real, but it was always likely to be fragile. Indianapolis had made too many mistakes and still had one last possession left to cash in.
