Fairbairn’s four field goals set the tone as Texans throttle Titans 26-3

Houston did not need a single burst of chaos to take over Sunday at Nissan Stadium. Ka'imi Fairbairn kept the scoreboard moving, C.J. Stroud finished two later drives, and the Texans' defence turned Tennessee’s offence into a slow, punishing afternoon in a 26-3 win.

Fairbairn built the lead one kick at a time

Tennessee struck first on Joey Slye’s 30-yard field goal with 10:39 left in the opening quarter, but that turned out to be the Titans’ only scoring moment. Fairbairn answered from 45 yards at 2:22 of the first, then spent the second quarter turning Houston’s control into points. He connected from 35 yards at 13:33, from 26 yards at 6:56 and from 53 yards at 1:15, sending the Texans to halftime up 12-3.

Those kicks mattered because they reflected steady, repeatable offence rather than a one-off big play. Houston finished with 20 first downs, converted 6 of 12 third downs and held the ball for 34:20. Stroud was sharp without forcing the game, completing 26 of 34 passes for 261 yards and spreading the work across the formation. Xavier Hutchinson led the receiving group with 65 yards, Nico Collins added 56, and Jaylin Noel supplied five catches before his touchdown later put the game away.

Houston’s defence left Tennessee nowhere to go

The Texans finally turned their territorial edge into a touchdown at 6:37 of the third quarter, when Stroud punched in a 2-yard run for a 19-3 lead. Any thought of a Tennessee push disappeared quickly in the fourth. At 14:09, Stroud found Noel for a 9-yard touchdown pass, and Houston’s 26-3 margin matched the shape of the afternoon: a team that kept moving the chains against one that could not build enough momentum to threaten it.

Tennessee’s numbers were stark. The Titans managed 187 total yards on 58 plays, averaged 3.2 yards per snap and went 4-for-11 on third down. They also came up empty on both fourth-down tries and did not turn their lone red-zone trip into a touchdown. Cam Ward completed 23 of 36 passes for 170 yards, but the volume never became danger. Wan'Dale Robinson’s six catches for 53 yards led the team, while Tyjae Spears caught nine balls for only 28 yards, a stat line that captured how difficult every meaningful gain was to find.

Houston’s front made sure Ward rarely had a clean, comfortable rhythm. Will Anderson Jr. delivered the most damaging line of the day with three sacks, three tackles for loss and three quarterback hits. Danielle Hunter added another sack, giving the Texans four in all. Behind that rush, Azeez Al-Shaair posted 11 tackles, Jake Hansen intercepted Ward, and Jalen Pitre recovered the Titans’ other turnover after Spears lost a fumble. Tennessee finished with two giveaways; Houston had none.

Our take

This was a convincing Houston win because it did not depend on one area carrying the whole burden. The Texans were not explosive on the ground, finishing with 80 rushing yards on 26 attempts, but they stayed efficient enough through Stroud to keep the game orderly. When drives stalled, Fairbairn was perfect. When Tennessee needed a break, Houston protected the ball and denied it one.

For the Titans, the most obvious problem was efficiency. Ward was sacked four times for 40 lost yards, the run game produced 57 yards, and the offence never created a touchdown drive. Even without assigning motives or design, the production shows an attack that needs more from each snap. Spears’ nine receptions for 28 yards and Tennessee’s 3.2 yards per play tell the same story: completions were available, but few of them changed the shape of the game.

Houston still left a couple of corrections on the table. The Texans were flagged 11 times for 95 yards, and a team that reached the red zone four times scored touchdowns on only two of those trips. Against a weaker offensive day from the other side, that sloppiness did not matter. On a tighter Sunday, it might. Here, though, the larger truth was simple: Houston dictated pace, finished enough possessions, and let its defence turn a close first quarter into a runaway.
