Butker’s 40-yard kick at 0:00 ends Chiefs’ overtime edge over Colts

Indianapolis landed the first clean blow when Daniel Jones found Tyler Warren for a 1-yard touchdown at 8:25 of the first quarter. For a while, that looked like the template for the Colts: use Jonathan Taylor, finish short drives, and make Kansas City answer. The Chiefs did answer, first with Butker’s 46-yard field goal at 6:09, then with Patrick Mahomes hitting Travis Kelce from 13 yards out at 4:34 for a 10-7 lead.

What followed was the game’s central tug-of-war. Spencer Shrader tied it with a 42-yard field goal early in the second quarter and pushed Indianapolis ahead 13-10 with a 49-yarder at 9:44. Kansas City swung back in front on Mahomes’ 1-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Worthy with 2:25 left in the half, only for Taylor to break a 24-yard touchdown run with 0:59 remaining and restore a 20-17 Colts lead at the break.

The scoreboard stayed close, but the broader numbers already hinted at where the night was heading. Kansas City finished with 523 total yards, 29 first downs and 37:00 of possession. The Chiefs ran 78 plays to Indianapolis’ 63 and paired Mahomes’ production with 152 rushing yards. That kind of volume does not guarantee a win, but it usually guarantees pressure, and the Colts spent much of the night absorbing it.

Mahomes spread the damage, Taylor kept answering

Mahomes’ line was the engine of the comeback and the reason Kansas City never drifted for long. He completed 32 of 47 passes for 382 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, and he had answers in several parts of the field. Kelce led with nine catches for 101 yards and a score. Tyquan Thornton added 86 yards on four receptions, Rashee Rice had 83 on four catches, and Kenneth Walker III gave the passing game another 61 yards on six receptions to go with 117 rushing yards on 24 carries.

That balance made the Chiefs difficult to solve. Kansas City did not need one monster target share or one runaway rushing burst. It kept finding useful gains. Walker was productive on the ground at 4.9 yards a carry, and the Chiefs’ receiving table shows four players above 60 yards. Even with only 5-for-13 third-down efficiency, Kansas City kept extending the evening because it stayed clean where it mattered most: no turnovers, two successful fourth-down tries, and just enough finishing to keep the Colts chasing.

Indianapolis deserves credit for refusing to let the game separate. Taylor’s two rushing touchdowns gave the Colts their clearest control points, and Shrader was perfect on three field goals. Jones was efficient enough at 22 of 31 for 210 yards, with Josh Downs leading the team on seven catches for 72 yards and Laquon Treadwell supplying a valuable 61 yards on only three receptions. When Taylor scored from five yards out with 5:37 left in the fourth quarter, the Colts had erased Kansas City’s 27-20 lead and dragged a high-yardage Chiefs night back to even at 27-27.

The clean team won, but both sides left lessons behind

Overtime distilled the whole game into one theme. Butker put Kansas City ahead 30-27 with a 31-yard field goal at 5:09, Shrader answered from 38 yards at 3:11, and Butker settled it from 40 yards at 0:00. Three overtime points each would normally feel interchangeable; here they reflected a larger truth. The Chiefs kept generating one more chance than the Colts could comfortably survive.

Our take: Kansas City earned this result by being the cleaner team, not necessarily the more clinical one. The Chiefs finished without a turnover while Indianapolis had the game’s only giveaway, a Jones interception claimed by Kristian Fulton. That matters in any close game, and it mattered even more here because Kansas City also had the larger yardage base. Still, there is room for sharper finishing. A 523-yard night that ends with three touchdowns and four field goals, plus a 3-for-5 red-zone mark, leaves points unclaimed. The penalties are part of that too: 8 for 86 yards is a lot for a team that otherwise controlled so much of the evening.

Our take on Indianapolis: the Colts showed enough offensive steadiness to win many tighter, lower-volume games, but this one demanded more resistance. Kansas City reached 523 yards, 29 first downs and 152 rushing yards, while four Chiefs pass-catchers topped 60 receiving yards. That is too much to keep surviving, even with Taylor scoring twice and Shrader going 3-for-3 on field goals. If there is a useful correction point for Indianapolis, it starts with finding a way to disrupt that kind of spread-out production earlier, because punting only twice and still losing says the defensive burden became too heavy.
