A slow start flipped before halftime
Washington opened with the cleaner scoreboard, if not the cleaner afternoon. Drew Stevens hit from 31 yards at 12:57 of the first quarter and added a 29-yarder with 6:21 left in the period, giving the Commanders a 6-0 lead while Indianapolis searched for rhythm.
The Colts found it just once before the break, but that one stretch changed the game. Jonathan Taylor punched in a five-yard run with 3:23 left in the second quarter to give Indianapolis its first lead, and Shrader drilled a 48-yard field goal as time expired in the half for a 10-6 edge.
That margin widened immediately after halftime. Taylor scored again from five yards out at 12:45 of the third quarter, pushing the Colts to 17-6 and putting Washington in chase mode. The Commanders answered quickly when Athan Kaliakmanis connected with Treylon Burks for a 47-yard touchdown at 10:39, trimming the deficit to four, but the opening never grew larger than that.
Taylor finished the work, and Shrader kept adding points
Indianapolis never produced an overwhelming offensive line on paper, yet it was clinical where the game demanded it. Taylor carried 20 times for 95 yards and the Colts' first two touchdowns, repeatedly converting drives that reached scoring range. Daniel Jones added the final touchdown on a four-yard run early in the fourth quarter, and that sequence effectively broke Washington's last real chance to turn the game back into a one-score finish.
Shrader's afternoon was just as important. He was perfect on three field-goal attempts and three extra points, connecting from 48, 52 and 44 yards. His 52-yarder at 7:03 of the third quarter was particularly timely: Washington had just made it 17-13, and Indianapolis restored a full seven-point cushion only 3:36 later.
Jones' passing numbers reflected a grinding rather than explosive day. He completed 19 of 34 passes for 143 yards with one interception, leaning most often on Laquon Treadwell and Tyler Warren, who each caught five passes. Seth McGowan also contributed useful field position with four kick returns for 102 yards, a quieter part of the game that helped the Colts keep the field manageable even when their offence stalled.
Washington's yardage could not overcome its misses
The Commanders will look at the raw yardage total and wonder how it produced only 13 points. Washington finished with 317 total yards to Indianapolis' 257, but the more revealing numbers were elsewhere: 2-for-15 on third down, 1-for-4 on fourth down, no touchdowns on two red-zone trips, and 10 penalties for 84 yards. That combination turns movement into wasted possession far too often.
There were flashes. Kaliakmanis threw for 186 yards and the long touchdown to Burks, Marcus Mariota chipped in 46 passing yards and a 35-yard run, Dyami Brown averaged better than 21 yards on his three catches, and Stefon Diggs led the team with five receptions. Washington also forced two turnovers, intercepting Jones once and recovering his fumble. None of it changed the arithmetic that mattered most: the Commanders reached scoring territory often enough to stay close, but not cleanly enough to take control.
Our take: this was a game of efficiency, not volume. Indianapolis did not dominate the stat sheet, and its own offence has obvious room to improve after posting just 17 first downs, converting 5 of 16 third downs and averaging 3.9 yards per play. Still, the Colts were 3-for-3 in the red zone and nearly penalty-free, committing one infraction for five yards. Washington was more productive between the 20s, but the penalties, failed conversions and empty red-zone trips kept giving away the margin. For the Colts, a steadier passing game would make this formula less fragile. For the Commanders, the first priority is simpler: turn the better stretches of movement into touchdowns before the mistakes bury them.
