Mahomes and Walker finish the key drives as Chiefs beat Dolphins 24-10

Kansas City struck first and stayed in front

The Chiefs opened the scoring quickly when Walker ran in from 10 yards out with 12:54 left in the first quarter. Miami answered before the quarter was done, getting a three-yard touchdown run from Ollie Gordon II at 3:27 to level the game at 7-7.

That tie did not last long into the second quarter. Mahomes found Walker on a five-yard touchdown pass with 12:58 remaining in the half, restoring Kansas City’s lead and giving the Chiefs a 14-7 advantage they carried into the break.

From there, the shape of the game became clear. Miami kept itself involved, but Kansas City made the cleaner scoring plays, and every successful finish by the visitors increased the pressure on a Dolphins offence that never reached the end zone again after Gordon’s first-quarter run.

Mahomes found the bigger gains when Miami narrowed the margin

Miami’s best push came in the third quarter. Riley Patterson’s 37-yard field goal with 10:10 left in the period cut the deficit to 14-10 and kept the game within one score heading to the fourth.

Kansas City’s answer was measured rather than frantic. Harrison Butker pushed the lead back to seven points on a 34-yard field goal with 11:35 left, then Mahomes and Travis Kelce delivered the play that effectively closed the afternoon. With 2:55 remaining, Mahomes hit Kelce for an 11-yard touchdown and a 24-10 lead.

Mahomes’ stat line explains why the Chiefs were able to separate despite running only 46 plays. He completed 83.3 per cent of his passes, averaged 10.3 yards per attempt and threw both scoring passes. Walker added 70 rushing yards on 18 carries to go with his touchdown catch, while Rashee Rice led Kansas City with seven receptions for 88 yards. Kelce caught only two passes, but they went for 59 yards, including a long gain of 48 that underlined the Chiefs’ ability to produce more from fewer chances.

Our take: Efficiency, not volume, decided it

This was not a game Kansas City won by monopolizing the ball. Miami actually matched the Chiefs with 18 first downs, ran 61 plays to Kansas City’s 46 and held possession for 32:28. The difference was what happened on each snap. Kansas City averaged 7.2 yards per play; Miami managed 5.1. In a 14-point result, that gap matters more than the raw play count.

The Dolphins did enough to suggest this was not a no-show. Malik Willis threw for 201 yards and added 48 on the ground, Chris Bell finished with 67 receiving yards, Malik Washington had 56, and Greg Dulcich contributed 49. Miami also went 8-for-15 on third down, comfortably better than Kansas City’s 3-for-6. But the Dolphins came up empty on both fourth-down attempts, produced no passing touchdowns and finished with a 1-for-2 mark in the red zone. Those are the sorts of margins that make a productive afternoon feel shorter than it was.

Kansas City was not flawless either. Mahomes was intercepted once by Jacob Rodriguez, and the Chiefs went 3-for-5 in the red zone rather than turning every opportunity into a touchdown. Still, the visitors absorbed that mistake because they were sharper in the moments that changed the scoreboard. Miami forced only one takeaway of its own, while its lone turnover — a Malik Willis fumble recovered by L'Jarius Sneed — reduced its room for error. When both quarterbacks stayed unsacked, the game came down to execution, and the Chiefs were decisively better at it.
