Ranger Suárez and Wilyer Abreu steer Red Sox past Royals after Carter Jensen’s tying homer

The Kansas City Royals got one loud swing from Carter Jensen, but Boston owned the larger shape of the game. Behind seven strong innings from Ranger Suárez and a two-run answer from Wilyer Abreu in the sixth, the Red Sox beat Kansas City 5-1 at Fenway Park.

Suárez set the terms before Boston’s bats took over

This result began on the mound. Suárez gave Boston seven innings of control: five hits allowed, no walks, eight strikeouts, and 69 strikes in 96 pitches. Kansas City made him work through 32 at-bats, but not often on its own terms. The Royals finished with a .156 average, a .182 on-base percentage, and 11 strikeouts, which is another way of saying Boston’s pitchers kept shrinking the game one plate appearance at a time.

The work after Suárez only tightened the grip. Garrett Whitlock handled the eighth and struck out all three hitters he faced, a sharp bridge that removed any thought of late momentum. Aroldis Chapman pitched the ninth, allowing only a walk. Taken together, Boston’s staff gave up five hits and one run over nine innings. Kansas City did steal a base and put nine runners on left on base for the game, but the missing ingredient was sustained traffic: just one walk, just two extra-base hits, and only one inning that changed the scoreboard.

A tie in the sixth, and an answer that mattered more

Boston first broke through in the fourth when Adley Rutschman singled to center and Roman Anthony came home for the game’s opening run. That sequence fit the quieter theme of the Red Sox offense. There was no home-run burst here, only accumulation. Anthony finished 2-for-4 and scored once, while Rutschman went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Against Randy Dobnak, Boston was not explosive early, but it kept placing stress on the inning until a run arrived.

Kansas City finally erased that lead in the sixth when Carter Jensen homered to right, a 386-foot drive that tied the game 1-1. It was the Royals’ cleanest blow of the afternoon and Jensen’s line reflected it: 1-for-4, one run, one RBI, one homer. But the tie did not reset the game for long. Boston answered in the bottom half when Abreu doubled to right, scoring Rutschman and Mickey Gasper for a 3-1 lead. That was the swing that turned the afternoon. The Royals’ pitching staff allowed two inherited runners to score, and that detail tells the story of the inning as clearly as the double itself.

Dobnak’s final line was respectable enough to keep Kansas City close for a while — 5 2/3 innings, four hits, three earned runs, no walks, four strikeouts — but Boston became harder to contain once the game moved past him. The Royals issued only one walk all day and did not allow a home run, yet Boston still got to five runs because the contact kept finding room. Four doubles can do that even without a ball leaving the park.

Our take: Boston looked solid, Kansas City looked too thin

Boston added the kind of insurance that makes a one-run game feel much older than it is. In the seventh, Nick Sogard scored on Caleb Durbin’s single to left, with Durbin thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. In the eighth, Sogard doubled to center to score Trevor Story and make it 5-1. Sogard ended 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, Story scored once, and Durbin drove in a run of his own. Add Abreu’s two RBIs and the Red Sox had production spread across the lineup rather than resting on one hitter.

Our take: this was a sturdier offensive game from Boston than the final total might first suggest. The Red Sox drew only one walk and still left 10 men on base, so there was unused offense sitting in plain view. Even so, they collected 10 hits, four doubles, and got something meaningful from Anthony, Rutschman, Abreu, Sogard, and Durbin. That is a useful profile because it does not depend on one swing. If there is an obvious improvement point, it is efficiency: with 10 hits, a hit batter, and only five strikeouts, Boston had room to turn pressure into more than five runs.

For Kansas City, the concern is not simply that it lost; it is how narrow the path to scoring looked. The Royals managed five hits, one walk, and a solo homer, and they struck out 11 times. Bobby Witt Jr., Salvador Perez, Vinnie Pasquantino, and Michael Massey each had one hit, but none drove in a run. When a team posts a .182 on-base percentage, even a well-struck home run tends to live alone. On the pitching side, Kansas City avoided free passes better than the score implies, but 10 hits and four doubles allowed meant too many Boston at-bats ended with runners moving into scoring position. The cleanest read on the day is simple: Boston absorbed the Royals’ one big swing and made sure it stayed by itself.
