Caleb Durbin started it, Trevor Story finished it as Red Sox beat Royals 4-1 at Fenway

Boston did not bury Kansas City early, but it controlled the game in the ways that usually matter most: a clean defensive night, six scoreless innings from Payton Tolle, one early extra-base swing from Caleb Durbin and the late two-run hit from Trevor Story that finally gave the scoreboard some breathing room.

A quiet game until Durbin made the silence useful

For six innings, the game carried the shape of a pitching-led afternoon. Boston got the first crack in the second when Durbin drove a home run to left-center, and that swing stood alone on the board for a long stretch. In a sport that often rewards the team that can force opponents into repeated trouble, the Red Sox instead won the early innings by making one clean mistake-free strike count.

That did not mean Kansas City was absent. Noah Cameron kept the Royals in contact by working six innings and allowing only four hits and one run, with Durbin’s homer the only damage against him. That mattered, because Boston’s offense was not overwhelming in volume. The Red Sox finished with eight hits, but they also struck into two double plays and left traffic behind. Cameron gave the Royals a game that stayed available.

Kansas City simply could not turn enough baserunners into a real rally before the seventh. The Royals drew five walks, were hit once and saw 157 pitches, but they finished with only five hits, all singles, and struck out 12 times. That combination is why a one-run deficit felt manageable on paper but stubborn in practice. When the breakthrough finally came, it was Carter Jensen’s single to right in the seventh that scored John Rave and moved Tyler Tolbert to third, leveling the game at 1-1.

The tie did not last long, and Story made sure of that

Boston’s best answer came immediately. The Royals had finally dragged the game even, but the Red Sox reclaimed the lead in their half of the seventh when Roman Anthony singled to left, bringing home Durbin and sending Nick Sogard to third. It was not a loud response in the way a home run is loud. It was a timely one, and in a game with so little margin, that was more important.

The eighth inning is where the result took on its final shape. Willson Contreras, who reached base three times on two hits and a walk, came around to score, and Adley Rutschman scored as well when Trevor Story lined a single to left for two RBIs. Story’s line was compact and decisive: two hits, two runs driven in, and the last scoring play of the day. Boston never had an explosive inning full of chaos; it had a sequence of clean contributions from hitters who cashed in the runners in front of them.

The pitching arc matched that pattern. Tolle’s six scoreless innings gave Boston the game’s steadiest stretch, even if the bullpen made the finish less tidy than the final score suggests. Erik Miller’s seventh included two walks and the tying run, but Garrett Whitlock’s two outs kept the game from tilting further. Then Aroldis Chapman handled the ninth with pure swing-and-miss stuff, striking out three Royals, though the two walks he issued were a reminder that even a successful close can still leave work to clean up.

Our take: Boston won on the details that hold up

A three-run final margin can look straightforward, but this was really a contest shaped by the difference between total contact and meaningful contact. Boston collected only three more hits than Kansas City, 8-5, yet the Red Sox produced the game’s only home run, its only double and a 12-5 edge in total bases. The Royals put men on base often enough to stay alive, but with no extra-base hits, they asked too much of singles and walks. That is a hard way to win on the road against a staff that struck out 12.

If Kansas City is looking for the clearest place to improve from this one, it starts there. Five walks and a hit batter should create more than one run, especially when the lineup also gets 38 plate appearances. The Royals do not need a grand theory from this result; they need more impact when they do reach base and fewer empty trips ending in strikeouts. Twelve punchouts and no extra-base hits left almost no room for their two errors or any other small mistake.

Boston, meanwhile, can feel good about the broad outline while still acknowledging the loose edges. The Red Sox had 13 baserunners from hits, walks and hit batters, but they did not separate until the eighth, and the bullpen issued five walks overall, including four from Miller and Chapman combined over the last three innings. Even so, this looked like a mature win: strong starting pitching, no defensive errors, and enough timely offense from Durbin, Anthony and Story to keep a close game from becoming a frustrating one. Against the Royals, that was more than enough.
