Five Houston homers sink Royals as Ethan Pecko steadies Astros in 6-2 win

Houston turned an early deficit into a simple arithmetic problem Thursday at Daikin Park: the Royals managed three hits, while the Astros kept sending baseballs over the fence. The result was a 6-2 Houston win built on five home runs and a long, calming outing from Ethan Pecko after a shaky start.

An early tie, then a steady pull away

Kansas City landed the first punch in the opening inning, but it came at a cost. Maikel Garcia's ground ball turned into a run-scoring double play, bringing home Carter Jensen for a 1-0 Royals lead while also cutting the inning short. Houston erased that almost immediately when Jeremy Pena homered to left in the bottom of the first, and that quick answer changed the shape of the night. The Royals would spend the rest of the game trying to recreate offense that never really returned.

Houston moved in front in the second when Daulton Varsho drove a 407-foot homer to right-center, and the game settled for a while at 2-1. That quiet stretch mattered because it gave the Astros time to reset a game that had begun awkwardly on the mound. Kansas City put traffic on early, but it never turned that pressure into sustained damage, and by the middle innings Houston had the game exactly where it wanted it: close enough to control, open enough for one more burst.

That burst came in the fifth and sixth. LaMonte Wade Jr. homered to right in the fifth, then Yordan Alvarez followed later in the inning with a drive to right of his own, stretching the lead to 4-1. In the sixth, Houston scored without leaving the yard when Pena beat out an infield single to third and Taylor Trammell came home. It was a useful reminder that the Astros were not living on one swing alone, even if the home run column told the loudest story.

Pecko gave Houston the innings it needed

The Astros needed order after Miguel Ullola recorded only two outs, allowing a run and two walks in 0.2 innings. Bryan King supplied a clean bridge with 1.1 scoreless innings, and then Ethan Pecko took over the game. His line — 5.2 innings, three hits, one run, four strikeouts on 71 pitches, 49 for strikes — gave Houston exactly what it required after the unsteady opening. By the time Bryan Abreu and Josh Hader handled the last four outs, the Royals had already run out of ways to put consistent pressure on the scoreboard.

Kansas City's offensive ledger was brutally thin. Jensen went 2-for-3, scored once and drove in the Royals' final run. John Rave had the club's only other hit and scored in the eighth. Everyone else in the lineup finished a combined 0-for-23. That is how a team ends up with a .103 average for the night, no home runs and only four total bases. The Royals did draw two walks and leave eight men on base, but there was never enough hard production behind the table-setting.

The one moment that hinted at a late twist came in the eighth, when Jensen singled to right and Rave scored to cut the deficit to 5-2. Houston answered before the inning could breathe. Trammell led off the bottom half with a 359-foot homer to right, restoring the four-run cushion and flattening the comeback attempt. It was the Astros' fifth homer of the game and maybe the most useful one, not because it was the longest or hardest to remember, but because it ended the only real doubt left on the board.

Our take: the power was real, but the details matter too

Houston earned this one with authority, not luck. Five home runs will always dominate the conversation, and they should, but the fuller picture is also encouraging for the Astros. They finished with 11 hits, two doubles and a stolen base, and Pena's two RBIs gave structure to the box score beyond the long balls from Pena, Varsho, Wade Jr., Alvarez and Trammell. Still, there is room to be pickier. Houston left 11 runners on base, so even in a game it controlled, there were extra runs available if the sequencing had been cleaner.

For Kansas City, the obvious repair is keeping the ball in the park. Royals pitchers allowed five home runs and 28 total bases on 11 hits, and Seth Lugo gave up four of those homers across his five innings. Connor Thomas and Alex Lange each allowed another run, while only Jose Cuas delivered a scoreless inning without a hit. The defense, to its credit, did not make the mound's job harder. Kansas City committed no errors and turned three double plays. On this night, that simply was not enough insulation against Houston's power.

The cleanest summary is that one team created loud contact and the other did not. Houston finished with nearly four times as many hits and seven times as many total bases as Kansas City, and that difference outweighed a few missed opportunities on both sides. The Royals were tidy in the field and patient enough to run Houston's staff to 117 pitches, but patience without impact can leave an offense stuck in place. The Astros, meanwhile, showed the kind of instant scoring that can cover an early wobble and turn a potentially messy game into a comfortable one by the eighth.
