Athletics bury Angels early, then ride Henry Bolte’s four-hit night to 7-3 win

A four-run first that changed everything

This game never really escaped the shape the Athletics gave it in the opening inning. Henry Bolte set the tone by getting on and eventually scoring the first run when Lawrence Butler singled to left. A few batters later, Donovan Walton supplied the decisive early blow, driving a three-run homer to right that also brought home Jeff McNeil and Zack Gelof. Before the Angels had recorded three outs, they were already chasing a 4-0 deficit.

The Athletics added again in the second, and the sequencing mattered almost as much as the extra run itself. Alika Williams came around on Bolte’s double to right, pushing the margin to 5-0 and reinforcing how much traffic Los Angeles was dealing with early. Bolte finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, the cleanest line in a deep Athletics attack. Walton drove in three despite only two official at-bats, and Butler, Williams and Gelof all helped keep the lineup moving. By the time Walbert Urena’s four innings were done, he had been charged with five runs on seven hits.

The Angels had an answer, just not enough of one

To Los Angeles’ credit, the middle innings briefly changed the feel of the night. Mike Trout opened the comeback with a solo homer to left in the fourth, a 393-foot shot that got the Angels on the board. Vaughn Grissom followed with one of his own, sending a 386-foot drive to right-center and cutting the lead to 5-2. Two swings did not erase the Athletics’ start, but they did force the home side to treat the rest of the game seriously.

The Angels pushed a little further in the fifth. Tyler Heineman scored when Grissom reached on an infield single to shortstop, with Zach Neto advancing to third on the same play. That made it 5-3 and gave Grissom all three Los Angeles RBIs on the night. Trout and Grissom combined for four of the Angels’ eight hits, while Neto reached base three times with a hit and two walks. Wade Meckler added two hits as well. The problem for the Angels was that the rally stayed narrow: two homers and one scratch run, with 10 runners left on base and two ground-ball double plays ending opportunities.

Langeliers restores order

Once the Angels had trimmed the game to two, the Athletics answered in the sixth with the kind of inning that separates a good offensive night from a nervous finish. Bolte and Williams both scored on Shea Langeliers’ double to right, restoring a four-run lead at 7-3. It was not the loudest swing of the game, but it may have been the most settling one. Langeliers finished with two RBIs, and the Athletics were back in command.

From there, the bullpen gave the Athletics exactly what was required. Jeffrey Springs had allowed all three Angels runs in 4 1/3 innings, including the Trout and Grissom homers, but Geoff Hartlieb covered 1 2/3 scoreless innings to bridge the game. Luis Medina and Hogan Harris followed with scoreless innings of their own. In total, Athletics relievers worked 3 2/3 innings without allowing a run. That mattered because Los Angeles kept making the pitchers work — 144 pitches across 33 plate appearances — but the comeback never got its second wave.

Our take: early pressure won it, but both clubs left something on the table

The Athletics earned this one by forcing the game onto their terms immediately. Thirteen hits, four doubles, one homer and three stolen bases is a broad, convincing offensive line, and it came from several places rather than one hot bat. Bolte’s 4-for-5 night was the headline, but Walton’s three-run homer created separation and Langeliers’ two-run double shut the door on the Angels’ push. Our take: that is a sustainable kind of box score because it is built on repeated contributions. The one obvious place for improvement is efficiency. Even in a seven-run win, the Athletics left 21 runners on base, which suggests there were more runs available than they converted.

For the Angels, there is a strange split in this result. The offense was not absent; Trout and Grissom supplied real damage, and the club drew three walks while collecting eight hits. But a comeback is harder when the opening innings hand the other side such a cushion. Los Angeles allowed five runs by the second inning, then seven overall on 13 hits, with four doubles, one homer, three stolen bases and a balk mixed into the night. Our take: the clearest correction is not dramatic. The Angels simply need cleaner run prevention at the start and more conversion once men reach base. The evidence is sitting right there beside the score: 10 runners stranded, two double plays, and too much ground to make up before the middle innings even arrived.
