Christian Moore and Zach Neto built the cushion the Angels needed in 7-5 win over Seattle

A small mistake became Seattle’s first problem

Los Angeles did not need an early barrage to seize control. Its first run came on a Bryce Miller wild pitch in the opening inning, with Wade Meckler scoring the kind of run that lingers because it forces the home side to chase before the game has settled. In a contest that Seattle spent most of the night trying to restart, that free run mattered.

The Angels added again in the fourth when Vaughn Grissom singled to left to bring home Mike Trout. Miller’s line was not a collapse — seven strikeouts across 6.0 innings usually gives a club a chance — but it was a start interrupted by the expensive moments. He allowed six hits, five runs and one home run, and Los Angeles kept turning scattered traffic into something firmer.

That pressure started with Meckler, who went 4-for-5 and scored twice, and it kept showing up around Zach Neto and Grissom. Neto finished 3-for-5, Trout scored despite going hitless, and Grissom reached three times. The Angels were not flawless at cashing in opportunities; 17 runners left on base says otherwise. But they repeatedly placed Seattle in one more jam than the Mariners could answer.

Moore’s swing changed the scale of the game

The cleanest turning point arrived in the sixth. Christian Moore, carrying a .186 average into the night, drove a 393-foot homer to left-center, scoring Meckler and Grissom with him. What had been a manageable 2-0 deficit became 5-0 on one swing, and that was the hit that changed the conversation from ‘Seattle is still in this’ to ‘Seattle now needs a rush.’

Neto made sure the pressure did not ease. He opened the seventh-inning scoring with a 415-foot solo homer to left-center, then returned in the ninth with a run-scoring double that brought Bryce Teodosio home for a 7-2 lead. Those were not empty numbers gathered after the outcome had tilted; they were the runs that kept re-establishing distance whenever the game threatened to drift back toward the Mariners.

Our take: this is why the Angels earned the result even after the late wobble. They produced six extra-base hits to Seattle’s two, and the middle of the scoring belonged to their most forceful swings. Detmers owned the silence, then the bullpen made it interesting

Before the ninth-inning noise, Seattle’s offense had spent most of the evening trying to solve Reid Detmers. The Angels left-hander covered 6.0 shutout innings, allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out seven. Jose Fermin followed with a scoreless seventh. Seattle finally pushed back in the eighth. Sam Bachman recorded only two outs while allowing three hits and a walk, and Los Angeles needed Tayler Saucedo to close the inning. The ninth brought another jolt: Arozarena tripled to right to score Weston Wilson, then Canzone launched a 368-foot homer to left to pull Seattle within two.

Our take: the Mariners do not need a grand theory after this one; they needed more offense much earlier. Twelve strikeouts, no doubles and only two hits through seven innings left too much for the last two frames to repair. Canzone’s 3-for-4 night, Arozarena’s late triple and Arroyo’s two-hit game gave Seattle a pulse, but Julio Rodríguez and Josh Naylor went a combined 0-for-8, with Rodríguez’s RBI coming on the hit by pitch rather than a ball in play.

For the Angels, the obvious concern sits beside the obvious success. A game that was 7-2 entering the bottom of the ninth finished as a two-run decision because the bullpen gave back five runs over the final two innings. Add in those 17 stranded runners, and there is a clear route to making this sort of win feel less fragile. Still, the larger story remains the one Los Angeles wrote first: strong work from Detmers, steady traffic on the bases, and two decisive power swings from Moore and Neto.
