Seattle’s early work created the margin
The Chargers struck first on Cameron Dicker’s 40-yard field goal at 11:54 of the opening quarter, but Seattle answered quickly. Sam Darnold found Emanuel Wilson for a 23-yard touchdown at 9:55, and the Seahawks never trailed again. It was an efficient start from an offence that did not post gaudy totals but found the plays it needed at the right moments.
Seattle widened the gap in the second quarter with two of the game’s most important scores. Rashid Shaheed broke free for a 28-yard rushing touchdown at 6:12, even if the missed extra point kept the door slightly open. Then, with 43 seconds left in the half, Wilson punched in an 8-yard run for Seattle’s third touchdown. Dicker’s 39-yard field goal as time expired cut the halftime deficit to 20-6, but the Seahawks had already established the shape of the afternoon.
Wilson sat at the centre of that first-half control and remained the game’s steadiest offensive player. He finished with 81 rushing yards on 21 carries and added three catches for 39 yards, scoring once through the air and once on the ground. Darnold’s final line — 13 of 22 for 168 yards, two touchdowns and one interception — reflected the same theme: not overwhelming volume, but enough accuracy and finish to support an early lead. Jaxon Smith-Njigba supplied the biggest receiving total with five catches for 76 yards.
The Chargers moved the ball, then gave too much away
Los Angeles did enough on paper to make this a winnable game. The Chargers finished with 301 total yards, ran for 147 at 4.6 yards a carry and got 45 rushing yards and a touchdown from Omarion Hampton. Justin Herbert added 40 rushing yards of his own and completed 19 of 31 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown. That sort of balance usually gives a team a chance into the fourth quarter.
What undermined it was everything around the yardage. The Chargers turned the ball over four times, with Herbert throwing two interceptions and also losing a fumble, while Derius Davis lost another. Seattle’s defence did not need to dominate every snap to tilt the game; it needed a handful of decisive plays, and it got them. Ernest Jones IV and Drake Thomas came away with interceptions, and the Seahawks added four sacks and 10 quarterback hits. Jones also led Seattle with 12 tackles, while Nick Emmanwori added nine tackles and a sack.
The Chargers’ defence still kept the game from running away entirely. Khalil Mack, Troy Dye, Tuli Tuipulotu and Justin Eboigbe helped produce three sacks, and Tuipulotu intercepted Darnold. Seattle finished with 286 total yards and converted only three of 12 third downs. The problem for Los Angeles was that its own mistakes were even more expensive. In a game where both teams combined for 30 penalties and 280 penalty yards, the Chargers were the side that could least afford extra damage.
A rally formed, but Seattle’s cushion held
Seattle appeared to have full control when Tory Horton caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Darnold at 10:23 of the third quarter for a 27-6 lead. The Chargers finally answered in kind when Herbert found Kimani Vidal from nine yards out at 4:53, trimming the margin to 27-13. Jason Myers restored a three-score gap with a 35-yard field goal at 1:19, and that kick turned out to matter once Los Angeles made one last push.
Hampton’s 2-yard touchdown run with 7:48 left in the fourth quarter brought the Chargers within 30-20, and Dicker’s 36-yard field goal at 2:14 cut it to seven. No further scoring followed. Dicker did his job all afternoon, going 3 for 3 on field goals and 2 for 2 on extra points, and Tre’ Harris chipped in 60 receiving yards while Quentin Johnston supplied a 44-yard catch. The late numbers looked respectable for Los Angeles. The earlier holes proved too deep.
Our take: enough quality, too much chaos
Seattle will take the result, and there was enough substance in it to justify the final margin. Wilson’s all-purpose production, Smith-Njigba’s 76 yards and a defence that created four takeaways were the clearest winning elements. Still, this was far from a clean Seahawks performance. They were flagged 14 times for 150 yards, managed only three third-down conversions in 12 tries and left a point behind on a missed extra point. Against stronger or cleaner opposition, that combination can turn a comfortable lead into a much shakier finish.
For the Chargers, the lesson is harsher because the useful parts of the performance are easy to spot. The running game travelled well, Herbert contributed on the ground, and Dicker was flawless. Yet 16 penalties for 130 yards and four turnovers outweighed nearly all of it. When a team gains more total yards than its opponent and still loses, the explanation is often self-inflicted, and that fits here. If Los Angeles can pair this level of rushing production with better ball security and fewer drive-breaking mistakes, results like this should become less common.
