A small opening became a comfortable lead
For the first inning, the game offered the Reds a familiar kind of hope: keep it close, wait for one swing, and see where the evening goes. That hope started thinning in the second, when the Dodgers turned a modest opening into the first run. Hunter Feduccia singled to center, Max Muncy scored, and Tommy Edman moved to third. It was only 1-0, but it established the pattern of the night. Los Angeles kept putting men aboard, and Cincinnati kept living with traffic.
The decisive blow came an inning later. Teoscar Hernández homered to left in the third, a 374-foot shot that also brought home Kyle Tucker and pushed the Dodgers to a 3-0 lead. That swing mattered not just because it doubled the margin, but because it rewarded the Dodgers for the kind of plate appearances that wore down Cincinnati pitching all night. Los Angeles finished with eight hits, five walks and two hit batters, forcing 158 pitches from the Reds staff even while leaving 19 runners on base.
That last number is worth lingering on. This could have become a lopsided score much earlier. Instead, Cincinnati hung around because the Dodgers grounded into three double plays and repeatedly left innings unfinished. Rhett Lowder’s line reflected that tension. He allowed five hits and three earned runs in 5.0 innings, but he also kept the game from tipping completely out of reach despite needing 91 pitches to get through his outing.
Yamamoto kept shrinking the Reds' margin for error
The more interesting half of the game, though, was the one Cincinnati could not solve. Yoshinobu Yamamoto worked 7.0 scoreless innings, allowed one hit, walked two and struck out seven on 91 pitches. That is the kind of start that changes the tone of every at-bat after it. With so little hard production available, the Reds were pushed into needing perfect sequencing. They never found it.
Cincinnati finished with three hits, three walks and 11 strikeouts, and the imbalance inside that line tells the story. Elly De La Cruz reached base three times and accounted for two of the Reds’ three hits. Juan Brito had the other hit. Everyone else in the lineup was held hitless, and several regular plate appearances simply ended in strikeouts. Sal Stewart, Eugenio Suárez and Matt McLain combined to strike out nine times, a brutal total in a game where baserunners were already scarce.
Even when the Reds did manage a little traffic, the Dodgers kept cutting off the inning before it could grow. Los Angeles turned three double plays behind its pitchers, an enormous hidden edge in a game with only four runs scored. After Yamamoto’s seven innings, Brock Stewart gave the Dodgers a scoreless eighth, and Tanner Scott closed the ninth with three strikeouts. Cincinnati did scratch out a hit and a walk against Scott, but the inning still ended the same way the game had felt for most of the night: with Dodgers pitching in control.
Freeland’s homer finished the argument
The last scoring play arrived in the seventh, when Alex Freeland homered to left, 345 feet, for a 4-0 lead. It was a useful exhale for the Dodgers, who had spent much of the game generating chances without fully cashing them in. Freeland finished 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI and a run scored, and his swing gave the Dodgers a cleaner-looking cushion than their earlier inefficiency suggested.
Freddie Freeman quietly put together the steadiest offensive line of the night, going 3-for-5. Hernández supplied the biggest swing, and Tucker reached twice on walks and scored on the third-inning homer. Feduccia’s RBI single opened the scoring and made sure Los Angeles had something tangible to show for its early traffic. It was not a complete offensive performance, but it was a sturdy one: enough contact, enough patience, and enough power to support a dominant pitching effort.
For Cincinnati, the relief work after Lowder mostly held up. Julian Garcia, Graham Ashcraft and Tejay Antone each posted a scoreless inning. The exception was Pierce Johnson, who allowed two hits and the Freeland homer in his inning. In another context, that might have been the game’s turning point. Here, it simply closed the door a little tighter.
Our take: the shutout says more about command than fireworks
Our take: this was a Dodgers win built less on nonstop offense than on making sure Cincinnati never had space to breathe. The home runs will make the highlight package, but Yamamoto’s seven scoreless innings and the team’s three double plays were just as important. A lineup can survive leaving 19 men on base when its pitchers allow only three hits. That is not a formula to rely on every night, but it was more than enough here.
If Los Angeles is looking for the one thing to clean up after a comfortable win, it is obvious: too many empty trips. Five walks, two hit batters and eight hits should usually create more than four runs, and the three double plays explain why the game stayed within reach longer than it might have. For the Reds, the path forward is just as clear. De La Cruz reached three times, but the rest of the lineup combined for one hit, and the club struck out 11 times while leaving 14 on base. Cincinnati does not necessarily need a dramatic overhaul from a game like this; it needs more innings where its few baserunners are supported by contact from the next man up. Against pitching this sharp, scattered offense is another word for no offense at all.
