Kyle Tucker’s early jolt and a no-walk pitching night send Dodgers past Reds 8-2

The Los Angeles Dodgers did not need suspense Thursday at Great American Ball Park. Kyle Tucker supplied the first punch, the middle innings built the cushion, and a pitching staff that never issued a walk made sure the Cincinnati Reds were chasing the game all afternoon in an 8-2 Dodgers win.

Tucker started it, and Cincinnati never erased the first impression

The game’s shape was visible almost immediately. Tucker’s two-run homer to right-center in the first inning, with Freddie Freeman aboard, put Los Angeles in front before Cincinnati had created any kind of answering pressure. That mattered because the Dodgers never had to play from behind, and it also previewed the kind of afternoon the Reds were in for: too many balls in play, too many baserunners, and too little room for a mistake.

Los Angeles kept leaning on that advantage in the second. Freeman’s sacrifice fly brought home Alex Freeland, then Tucker doubled to center to score Miguel Rojas for a 4-0 lead. By then the Dodgers had done more than simply string together hits. They were forcing Cincinnati’s pitching staff to work through long innings, and the full team line shows why: 12 hits, six walks, two hit batters and only three strikeouts. Brady Singer absorbed the worst of it, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings while walking four and failing to record a strikeout.

The fourth inning turned a strong start into a game that looked functionally decided. Max Muncy doubled to right to score Freeman and Tucker, and Josue De Paula followed with a single to right that brought in Teoscar Hernández. Cincinnati did answer through Sal Stewart’s solo homer to right later in the inning, but that 7-1 scoreline captured the afternoon: whenever the Reds found a bright moment, the Dodgers already had a larger one on the board.

A clean walk column made the pitching look even sharper

The Dodgers’ pitching line deserves almost as much attention as the offense because it removed the easiest path back into the game. Los Angeles pitchers did not issue a walk in nine innings. Justin Wrobleski covered 3.0 hitless innings with three strikeouts, Blake Treinen handled an inning that included Stewart’s homer but also struck out two, Landon Knack gave the Dodgers 4.0 scoreless innings, and Seth Halvorsen closed out the ninth despite allowing Cincinnati’s second run. Seven hits and two runs are manageable numbers on their own; seven hits and two runs with no free passes is how a game stays under firm control.

That left the Reds needing to earn everything. Stewart did his part, going 2-for-4 with both Cincinnati runs, including the home run that prevented the middle innings from becoming entirely empty. TJ Friedl added two hits, Tyler Stephenson had one, and Will Banfield chipped in another, but the team’s larger offensive problem sat in plain view: no walks in 33 plate appearances. Cincinnati finished with a .212 on-base percentage for the game, struck out eight times, and grounded into one double play. Against a staff giving away nothing, that is simply not enough traffic.

There was one stretch in which Cincinnati at least steadied the game on the mound. After Singer’s difficult outing, Luis Mey, Tony Santillan and Pierce Johnson combined for 3.2 scoreless innings. That work kept the score frozen and gave the Reds a chance to make the late innings more respectable. Instead, Rojas added a solo homer to left-center in the ninth, and Cincinnati’s final push amounted to Juan Brito’s RBI groundout after Stewart had reached and come around to score. The Reds did avoid defensive damage — neither team made an error — but clean fielding could not erase how large the gap already was.

Our take: the Dodgers looked composed, and the Reds looked too easy to pitch into

For the Dodgers, this was the kind of victory that reads as comfortable but still leaves a clear item to polish. They scored eight runs and posted a 1.028 team OPS for the day, yet they also left 20 runners on base. That is not a complaint in an 8-2 win so much as a warning label for tougher games: this lineup created far more than it finished. Still, the broader signs were excellent. Tucker drove in three, Freeman scored twice and added an RBI, Muncy delivered the biggest fourth-inning swing, Rojas homered, and the staff’s zero in the walk column gave the whole performance a tidy, professional look.

For Cincinnati, the fixes are harder but also obvious. The pitching staff gave Los Angeles too many free entries into innings with six walks and two hit batters, while the offense offered too little resistance by drawing none at all. When one team reaches base eight times without a hit and the other does not do it once, the game usually tilts exactly as this one did. The encouraging pieces were real — Stewart was productive, Friedl found two hits, and the middle relievers calmed things down for a while — but the Reds would benefit from cutting down the free baserunners on the mound and finding more ways to get on base themselves. Thursday’s result was not mysterious. The Dodgers made Cincinnati work for every out, and Cincinnati never returned the favor.
