Marner ends special-teams duel in overtime as Golden Knights edge Kings 2-1

The Vegas Golden Knights needed only one clean finish in overtime to settle a game that spent long stretches on a knife edge. Mitch Marner scored at 2:40 of OT to lift Vegas past the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena, closing a game defined by power-play execution and sharp goaltending at both ends.

Every goal came with the extra skater

The first period offered no scoring, and that calm did not last long once the middle frame began. Trevor Connelly broke through at 2:37 of the second period with a snap shot, with Mark Stone and Marner drawing the assists. It was the first turn in what became a narrow special-teams contest rather than an open scoring night.

Los Angeles answered quickly enough to prevent Vegas from building much momentum. Artemi Panarin tied the game at 6:21 of the second with a wrist shot, assisted by Adrian Kempe and Brandt Clarke. That reply kept the teams even through 40 minutes and ensured the game would be decided by whichever side handled the small moments better after the early burst of second-period scoring.

Those small moments kept arriving, but neither side found another breakthrough in regulation. The third period stayed scoreless, Carter Hart finished with 26 saves on 27 shots for Vegas, and Darcy Kuemper turned aside 30 of 32 for Los Angeles. Both clubs helped their goaltenders with committed defending as well, with Vegas blocking 14 shots and the Kings 13. In the end, the scoring summary and the special-teams numbers matched exactly: Vegas went 2-for-3 on the power play, Los Angeles 1-for-3, and all three goals came with the man advantage.

Marner, Stone and Connelly shaped the finish

Overtime finally delivered the separation regulation could not. Marner ended it at 2:40 with a snap shot, finishing a sequence set up by Stone and Connelly. That made the deciding goal a repeat of the night’s central theme: Vegas leaning on its most productive hands at the right time.

Stone did not score, but he still left fingerprints on both Golden Knights goals with two assists. Connelly opened the scoring and later set up the winner, while Marner balanced the ledger with one assist before scoring the game-ending goal himself. Vegas did not spread its offence across the lineup Saturday; it got decisive involvement from a small cluster of players, and that was enough.

The numbers around the winning goal explain why Vegas had one more chance to decide the night. The Golden Knights finished with a 32-27 edge in shots, won 34 faceoffs to Los Angeles' 24, and posted a 58.6 faceoff win rate. They also recorded seven takeaways to the Kings' three. None of that produced a runaway result, but in a 2-1 overtime game, an extra draw won here and an extra possession there can be the difference between extending the evening and ending it.

Our take: small possession edges mattered most

This was not a result built on overwhelming offence. It was a result built on leverage. Vegas made more of its three power plays, controlled a higher share of faceoffs, and generated five more shots. In a one-goal game that stayed tied through the entire third period, those are not decorative statistics; they are the clearest explanation for why the Golden Knights eventually found the winner.

From the Kings' side, there was enough to keep the game alive but not enough to tilt it. Panarin supplied the only finish, Kuemper gave them strong goaltending with a .938 save percentage, and the power play converted once in three opportunities. The drag came elsewhere. Los Angeles lost the faceoff battle at 41.4 per cent and was charged with 18 giveaways. A team can survive one of those issues in a tight game. Surviving both at once is harder, especially when the opponent also converts twice on the power play.

Vegas, for its part, did not play a flawless game either. The Golden Knights were charged with 16 giveaways and took five penalties for 13 minutes, the same total number of penalties and penalty minutes as Los Angeles. There is still room for cleaner puck management and calmer discipline. But when the game asked for a decisive trio, Vegas had one. Stone created, Connelly contributed at both ends of the score sheet, and Marner supplied the finish that turned a tense, even contest into a Golden Knights win.
