Seiya Suzuki’s tying homer and Nico Hoerner’s sixth-inning single lift Cubs past Marlins 2-1

Miami struck first, but Matthew Boyd kept the damage small

The Marlins did get the first clean breakthrough. In the third inning, Brian Navarreto came home on Jakob Marsee’s single to center, with Marsee taking second on the play. In a game with only three scoring plays, that early run mattered for a while, and it gave Miami the sort of narrow lead that can reshape a low-scoring afternoon.

What made the difference for Chicago was that the lead never grew. Matthew Boyd gave the Cubs seven innings and allowed only that one run on five hits, with two walks and three strikeouts over 90 pitches. Suzuki changed the scoreline, Hoerner changed the result

For four innings, Tyler Phillips did the job Miami needed. He worked 4.0 scoreless frames, allowing three hits while walking four. That line hints at the tension of the game for the Cubs: they were getting men aboard, but not cashing them in. Chicago’s offense kept making the Marlins work anyway, eventually seeing 134 pitches, drawing five walks and taking four stolen bases over the course of the game.

The turn came in the fifth, when Seiya Suzuki erased the deficit with a 408-foot homer to center. It was the clearest offensive moment of the afternoon and the biggest swing in a game that had spent several innings waiting for someone to take control. Suzuki’s final line — 2-for-3 with a homer, an RBI, a run scored and a walk — stood above either lineup.

An inning later, Chicago moved from equal to ahead. Ian Happ scored on Hoerner’s single to left in the sixth, and that became the margin the Cubs protected the rest of the way. Hoerner finished with the RBI, Happ crossed the plate, and Jack Ralston absorbed the damage in a 1.1-inning outing that included three hits and both Chicago runs. To Miami’s credit, Josh Ekness and Victor Vodnik combined for 2.2 scoreless innings after that, but by then the Cubs had already found the two plays they needed.

The last six outs belonged to Chicago

Once the Cubs moved in front, the game shifted back to run prevention. Boyd had already supplied the bulk innings, and Chicago’s bullpen took it from there without allowing a hit. Daniel Palencia handled the eighth inning, and Ryan Zeferjahn finished the ninth for the save. The Marlins went from nursing a one-run lead to chasing one, and against Chicago’s staff there was no late answer available.

That is the hidden strength of the Cubs’ afternoon. They won without a huge offensive total — six hits and two runs is hardly an explosion — but they paired it with nine innings of pitching that allowed only five hits, one run and no homers. Even with one error in the field, Chicago never let a tight game become a messy one. In a one-run result, that matters as much as the headline swing.

Our take: both clubs can point to the same unfinished work

Chicago deserved the result because it created slightly more pressure and finally converted it. Five walks, six hits and four stolen bases gave the Cubs more paths into scoring position than Miami produced, and Suzuki plus Hoerner finished the job. Our take: the encouraging part for Chicago is that it won on a day when the offense still left room for growth. The Cubs had enough baserunners to score more than twice, so better sequencing with men aboard would make this kind of game feel less fragile. Cleaner defense would help too; one error in a 2-1 game is the sort of detail that can turn a solid pitching day into a frustrating loss.

The Marlins, meanwhile, have a different version of the same complaint. Their pitching was good enough to keep them in it all afternoon, especially with Phillips giving four scoreless innings and the bullpen recovering after the sixth. But the offense never made Boyd or the Cubs’ relievers pay often enough. Miami finished with five hits, three walks, only one extra-base hit and two ground-ball double plays. That combination suggests a club that found some access to the bases but not the sequencing to turn it into a second run.

So the final read is straightforward. The Cubs got the biggest swing, the deciding single and seven steady innings from Boyd. The Marlins got the first run and several chances to build on it, but not the second one that would have changed the shape of the day. In a game this slim, that was the whole story.
